So the other day i was driving and the pulley on the crank flew off...
the bolts are wrecked beyond belief and i think the crank is still ok (ie it's not stripped too)
I went to the vw shop to get new ones as i thought they were have em and i could just put new belts on there and be done in 10 minutes. They were out of stock... so i went to home depot to try and match the bolts up to no avail.
Anyone reckon i don't need to use an Allan head bolt? as in, use a hex head and still fit a socket on it.
I went in today again to the VW place and they wanted 14$ for the 4 bolts which turned out to be brake caliper bolts...
I bought them knowing i could return them if they didn't fit. Anyone suggest against using home depot $1 hex head bolts?
fastenall and brafasco sell bolts that will work just fine. I think they are M8 X 1.5mm
You can use a regular bolt but you'll have a hard time getting the socket in there I think.
I can get you some. I sell nuts and bolts. If I remember the bolts in question are an 8mmx1.25 thread by 20mm long. Let me know what you want weather it be socket head or hex stainless or 10.9 grade and I can get them tomorrow and have them shipped from work for actual cost. I will pm you the details of how to call me if you want to talk.
Just please don't go to fastenal...I guess you could say I compete with those guys and not only are MOST of them gay they will rip you off.
yeah, my car had hex on it when I got it, real pain to get the socket on, possible but a pain.
a local fastener shop had allen head bolts for the sam price as hex, so thats what I used

No they aren't 20mm long they are much longer. They go through the pulley and into the sprocket on the crank it's self.
Oddly enough there were only three in there to begin with and one of them is very short... I think something... strange... went on there at some prior date. I managed to drive the car home with just the alt & water pump belt on with two of the stripped bolts in there.

Good to know! How are their prices?
I got them they are M8-1.25 x 47mm but 45 from the washer on stock bolt. I picked up for today four x 45mm long free at work, give me your address and I will send it tomorrow. I didn't have stainless so they are a 12.9 which is just about a grade 8 equivalant. The stainless I had in stock were 55mm long and I didn't know if it would be ok into the crank sprocket or be too long. Send me the PM and I will send them cya Lucas ><>

Real good, especially if you're a frequent customer. They've got full access to OEM VW parts as well as the jobber stuff, but without the dealership level markups.
