vr6 head bolts on 11mm engines..
« on: November 04, 2009, 08:06:29 pm »
This just popped up on vortex today..

From woodrowstar,

11mm x 119 mm. works perfectly. vr6 head bolt kit consist of 10.

1.5 solid lifter head swapped onto 1.6 block (also, solid lifter).

The length would be good, but what about the tensile strenght??  I assume these are stretch bolts...

A four banger diesel probably makes a lot more pressure than a VR6 upon combustion. Wether or not VR headbolts would be strong enough, I don't know. They are stretch bolts.

BTW VR6 headbolt kits come with 20 bolts of different sizes (10 being 11mm*119mm). ARP does make a VR6 kit but you'll end up paying 250$ to use half the hardware.

Not sure I understand.  Isn't the issue with the 11mm block that there just aren't enough threads in the block holding?  Do the VR6 bolts address this?

Yeah, more threads would be better, but running a sharp bottoming tap down in the block holes as far as possible, prior to reassembly will usually cut a little more thread. That, and using studs seems to do pretty well, at least on the N/As, and supposedly to 10-15psi boost also. For 20-45psi, it's probably a grenade with the pin already dangling out, waiting to drop.

Seems like RaceTech's studs are around $150; ARP probably similar cost. Goes w/o saying that those holes have to be blown out squeaky-clean & dry, or trouble will find ya'. Don't ask how I know!

That's what I did 13 years ago when I rebuilt my 11mm block and had no issues.  When the times comes, I would really not like to cough up $100 for lousy studs.

It's not even so much that there isn;t enough threads in the block as the bolts themselves are just too short..   Had they made them a half inch longer things would have been fine..     If the stock VR6 bolts would indeed be strong enough this would be a dandy solution as the length would be about perfect....  THen again I haven;t looked what they cost, they may not be much of a savings over the studs..

The ARP studs have been running around $120 for a set..  And of course with those you thread them the whole way into the block which solves the issue too.. Studs are reusable as well.. The VR6 bolts woudl not be, and I need to see what they cost as well...

Nothing lousy about the studs.. Cracked blocks are lousy....
