New hoopty: 85 Diesel Golf!
« on: May 22, 2009, 10:00:39 am »
Hey folks,
since my Jetta is still down awaiting engine rebuild,
I opted to pick up another diesel to pass the miles with..

1985 Diesel Golf, 4 door.

Unfortunately, the roof rack did not come with..

So far:
New Alternator,
Rebuilt the whole shift linkage (did not have Reverse or 5th when purchased)
New tires,
3X new door handle ($7 ea!)
Swapped wheels with Ronal multi-spokes,
And getting ready to do the bad ball joint,
and oil change.

yeah, I would have kept them,
but my good friend has been looking for such wheels for awhile,
and since he rode with me to Savannah (5 hr ride)
to pick the car up,
the deal was he would ride with me,
as long as we swapped wheels if we made it back.

I am not sure what wheels this car needs,
but I am thinking P-Slots, maybe?
polished faces and painted inserts maybe?
...just a thought...

Good find, very clean for it's age. how much did you pay for it?

I also think that the steelies w/ beauty rings are awesome, just not the those steelies, I never liked those.

Also, IMO, (quote from the 'tex) Small doors + Big Bumpers = FAIL. That Car would definitely look great w/ some Euro Smalls on it:

My '86 For inspiration:

and don't think I'm biased toward small bumpers, I love big bumpers, too, just not on the early MKII's.

Nice find  ;)

Defo get smallies on there, it doesn't quite look right with big bumpers and no arch trims/side trims...

ive got bigs on my 92 Jet, and i would have nothing but big ones on it. but then again, its black, looks heavy, and the big bumpers definitely look better with the fender flairs and 17's. but on my 85 golf i used to have, it had smalls on it. i loved the way that thing looked with the early non aero front clip and smalls.

Yeah, the big/small bumper/door discussion is one that will be ongoing...
I am not sure which way to go,
I have a nice red stripe US skinny front,
but I dont have the belly pan up front under the bumper.... need to find before bumper conversion.

I am becoming quite partial to small doors, as the mirror is in a convenient place for my outstretched arm..

And you dont want to know what I paid:
(but Ill tell you anyways)
1992 Gas jetta = $900
Subtract the coilovers, rear adj. hollow sway, lower front subframe brace, upper strut top tie bars F&R, and the nice late Recaros, and the trade of the back seat for another set of late recaros, that I removed
means I have,  say, $400 left in the car?
And I drove it to Savannah and traded straight up with a kid I met here...

So, not too shabby for $400.
I have already spent that in parts:
New Alternator,
New Tires,
New ball joint,
New NOS "Golf" front mudflaps for mk2.....

But the car had lots of pluses:
Gasser intake,
Factory rebuilt MF code longblock installed 4 yrs ago,
New injectors 6 months ago...
Good compression numbers.
'03 GTi black leather front seats

I gotta take some pics tomorrow.

lol...

It's actually grease pencil. lol. This car was "rescued". It was turned into the junkyard as an abandoned vehicle, it was originally done as a joke.

Here is how she sits now!

I will be working on some mesh and duct for the black hole,
I am thinking RamAir!

I am only responsible for one of these stickers: Lower right glass.

I really really dig these mudflaps! Now on the mad hunt for matching rears!

My two favorite stickers!

4 Button GTi wheel, red stripe dash,  R32 shift knob (non-car people always go "WOW, a 6 speed!")
2003 GTi seats, not too bad! The seats gotta go, though. The install is very poorly done.

And this thing really just cruises out on the highway.
I can ride 4th to 70, and then to 5th there is still a big drop.
(I have had the speedo pegged, like 105 mph or so for about an hour straight coming back, but she cruises at 70-80 easily.)
It is an ACH code box, but it feels nothing like the ACH in my Jetta. (and it was painted and therefore out at one time)
My Jetta is at 3700-3800 at 75 MPH, and is about screaming.
This thing is just humming there!
It feels like a taller final drive has been installed....?
I Like!
