I just recently purchased a 1984 vw rabbit diesel. The odometer is stuck at 57,000 miles. It starts up fine but smokes when driving, especially during acceleration. It burns oil too. It is definitely leaking fuel from the injector pump. I have a puddle of fuel under the car/IP where ever I drive too. My max speed on the freeway with the 4-speed is 60-62mph. I would like to get this car back to drivable condition. What do I need to do? I am fairly mechanically inclined, but this is the first diesel I have ever owned. Things I think I need are: reseal IP with new viton seals, install new injectors, change timing belt, and possibly glow plugs. Also, where would I purchase these items and the necessary tools if in a kit form? Sorry for the long message!

I'm in the middle of my first reseal, just started going back together.
I think a search for "odometer fix" tells you how to fix that. Its common.
It should be faster, and is possibly sucking air through worn bushings in the front of the pump...in which case, you have to go beyond the seal kit.
Change the fuel filter and timing belt for sure.
A big reason the injector pumps leak is the switch to ULSD...if the pump was previously run on old diesel. Its a chemical interaction thing, and probably not avoidable. The new seal kit is not reformulated, but will work fine.
The seal kit is Bosch # DGK 126 for NA, DGK121 for Turbo. add an R at the end for Viton.
Parts stores, and even parts warehouses cannot seem to get this, even if you bring the box in to help em figure it out.
Ebay, or a diesel shop will have no trouble. I got mine from Diamond Diesel, just under $20. It comes with the wrong input seal (Cummins?), so you have to order that separate.
the reseal isn't "hard", but is a bit complicated. If you can rebuild a carburetor, and an auto trans valve body, you've done it all before.
You will also need a VW Diesel timing tools kit, or a clever fake.
New injectors from Kermatdi.com and dont forget the washers, there are several OHC IP pumps on ebay

Have you done a compression check? It'd be a good idea to check out the bottom end first. How much oil is it consuming?
I haven't done an accurate assessment of the oil burning problem. I just bought it and drove it home approximately 50 miles then parked it in my garage. Noticed that I had a IP leak and fuel on the garage floor. Also the previous owner had a SPACO reseal kit in the glove box just waiting to be installed. The previous owner gave me a quart of oil for the road trip home stating that it burned oil. I will definitely check the motor out better in the next 4 days when I have more time. I would like to do a compression check on the motor. Do you have any suggestions on how to perform this check and where to get the necessary tools? Thank You

It's handiest to check through the injector hole rather than the glow plug hole whick these kits can do.
