1.9TD swap into 1993 passat VR6/ Auto shell? Whats required?
« on: October 23, 2009, 08:16:20 pm »
In the spring I swapped my 1.9TD into a 1998 Mk3 2.0L gasser shell. The swap works perefct and is running great in the current shell, nut i need more space....and i hate Mk3's.  My friend bought a  minty clean 1993 passat wagon for the VR6, and i can get the shell for cheap ;D. In order to swap my 1.9TD into this VR6 shell what is required. It has 5 bolt hubs and an auto.My main questions are

- can i use the current passat subframe and front crossmember for the 1.9TD
-or can i use the subframe from the mk3
-can i use the pedal assembly/shift linkage from the mk3 in the passat
-will the MK3 axles work on the passat
-can i use the front and rear hubs/ brakes from the MK3

Basically i would like to use my known good Mk3 parts to complete the  three following swaps on the passat
-VR6 to 1.9TD
-Auto to manual
-5bolt to 4bolt

Or will i need a 5speed diesel passat for parts as well.

Contact Mike, he does these conversions often, he can probably tell you what you need to know.
He specializes in VR6/GLX to TDI swaps.

I happen to have a 93 passat aaz and also part out mk3 jetta/golfs.  I can tell you that the tranny's are different between the 2, and the car is wider, so you probably won't be able to reuse the drive shafts.  Radiator on the passat has the return on the DS, so a new upper rad hose may be in order.  The shifter setup may be an issue.

You know what, it sounds like too much trouble!  Better off to sell the shell to me, and I'll drop my AAZ passat setup into it and send you pictures! ;D
