Injector Pump Sprocket...Strange Pic?
« on: October 22, 2009, 12:25:42 pm »

96' Golf 1.9 TD

I have to do a timing belt change and injector pump timing. I am new to this and have studied Vince's how to.
My problem is with the IP sprocket. It doesn't have holes like all the ones I seen and it has 3 bolts as well a center nut.
I haven't seen one like mine anywhere online and I'm not sure how I would lock it in place with the pin lock.
Can anyone be of assistance?

Looks like I have oil leaking in the timing belt compartment also. Not sure where it is coming from. Any guess? Won't know until everything's apart.

Trying to find a IP timing gauge around Barrie is not working. Anyone know where I can pick one up locally?

You don't need a gauge to time that pump.

If you look at the black pulley that the pump gear is bolted to (with those 3 bolts) there is a notch in it. There is a notch in the very top of the pump mounting surface. You just align the notch with the hole and put a 7mm? drill bit etc in and it's timed.

Loosen off the 3 bolts, loosen the cam gear from the camshaft, tension the belt and then tighted the cam and pump up. Spin it over by hand and then away you go.

So....I don't have to move the pump forward or back if the timing is a little off? I'm not too clear on this.

I don't need to go out and get an injector timing gauge?

Correct, that pump does not rotate. Instead the pulley "rotates" when the 3 bolts are loosened. To fine tune the timing you just need to loosen the 3 bolts, rotate the pump using the large nut in the center and then slide in the locking pin.

That black hub is preset at the factory/shop so you don't need to use the gauge anymore. Obviously if you do want to advance the pump timing, you'll need to purchase the gauge, or just go by ear. You'll always have the starting point to fall back on if you advance it too far.

When you set your engine at TDC using the crank you should be able to slide the pin in. It's normal to have to rotate the engine a small bit back or forth to get it to go in.

IIRC the pin will be factory-calibrated in the 0.80mm range... a good start for emissions but you may want to advance it a bit with a dial indicator eventually if you find the engine a bit anemic for your taste.  ;)

I should really add a picture of the factory-calibrated sprocket to my HOW_TO, now that more folks are starting to run AAZs.

I do find that the car doesn't seem to have get up and go off the start like my last 95' TD Golf. No "Umph" to it. It seems ok once it gets to 80km and above into 5th gear but just sluggish in the lower end. Will advancing the pump timing fix/help that or maybe do I need to do the governor mod?

If you have that pic of the calibrated sprocket, I'd love to see it!

Actually, I was referring to a picture like yours that shows the factory-calibrated sprocket.   ;)
