Adding oil capacity

I'm in the final strokes of my vanagon 50* m-tdi build & am thinking of the pros & cons of adding a quart or two of oil capacity. Oil temp on the van installs can be an issue, i have a PD150 oil cooler for it & while the DI's do run cooler oil than the IDI's its still on my mind. Eurospec sells oil pan spacers for 15* engines (+ 2 quarts) & that would get me a bit more at 50* but the pickup would need to be modified...

Anyway I'm just wondering if anyone has thoughts on a few more liters of lube...

My personal opinion... and it's just that... is that you won't run any cooler with more oil.  It will just take longer to get up to temperature... ie more volume to heat up... but once you're there you're there.

If you're solving for cooler oil my thought would be to add cooling capacity... bigger oil/water, extra oil/air, etc.

I would think it wouldn't be a bad thing. 2 more quarts of oil to trap soot at least. I would think that the oil would be slower to change temp either way since there is more mass there. It always seemed to run a little cooler in my SBC when I put the big filter on it, I think it was a 2 quart instead of a 1. If you welded cooling fins on the oil pan I bet it would run even cooler :D

I was thinking of relocating the oil filter, it would allow for more oil capacity and easier access to change the oil filter.

Front-mount oil cooler! :D



Hoses / tubing alone forward and back should net you 2 extra quarts...

i have the FS-2500 bypass oil filter :) the metal housing does help cool the oil so for the winter i'm going to make a little 'sock' for it.  ;D

best of both worlds though... extra quart or so of oil, mild oil cooling, and most of all excellent soot removal :)

i would definitely like to have their filter housing made out of aluminum though. it weighs about 10 lbs!!! (super rugged.. made for a big rig)
