variable displacement turbo
« on: January 01, 2010, 10:30:34 am »
what year did this turbo come to canada? I hear the vanes seize up and require a tear down to repair. (have been told hosing them down with oven cleaner works)

VNTs first showed up on the early Canadian TDI engines... something like mid-1999 for Golfs and Jettas... perhaps a bit earlier on the Passats.

The vanes and/or actuator can gum up with carbon, especially if the engine is babied... driving aggressively every once in a while is actually a good thing for a VNT.

I personally would not attempt to clean out a VNT any way other than thru disassembly, if some spirited driving didn't do the trick.  ;)

Are you sure Vince? I thought the VNTs didn't come out until the ALH engines in 99.5

Yeah I think you are right. I have no idea on years or anything with NBs but I think that they are all ALH engines.
