Engine for land speed racing

Hey guys looking at possibly going after some diesel land speed records
and would like to know some dimensions for a 2L and 3L engine. not sure what models. What kind of power can be made with these engines?
they need to go 5 miles at full power so they need to be durable.
we can use any fuel or power adders we want propane, nitrous, water what ever. right now we are just looking at what's out there.

Do you mean diesel?  Obviously, you want common rail, and if you are posting here, you want current VW 2.0 inline 4 and 3.0 V6.  I think you can a decent drawing of the 4 bangers from the VW Industrial engine site, but I don't know where to find the dimensions of the V6 (it is in the latest Tuoareg in this market).

What classes, what sanctioning body, what venue are you planning?

definitely use nitrous, and common rail. twin cam is also a good idea, and IIRC all of the new VW CR diesels are twin cam.

i think he is asking about toyota's 2.4 ( 2L ) and 2.8 ( 3L) diesel engines .

2L wont hold much power heads are bad for cracking at pre chamber ,3L i have not heard of to meny probs with the 3L and a lot beter than the 2L  if it is toyota you are going on about

around here we see a lot of used japenese domestic trucks / suvs imported from japan .
 and with the 2.4 litre turbo diesel it is very common to have the heads crack , within  what seems hours of them  leaving the dock .
the fix is to replace the 2.4 head with a 2.8 head

redlightracing.org is at the flats as we speak with their X-Prize contender 1.2l TDI powered Honda Insight. They will most likely set the record for fastest diesel electric Insight since theirs is the only one in existence but it'll be good for publicity.

If you want some !!BIG!! power maybe you should pursue the v10 5.0l engine found in the Touareg which stock pumps out 308hp and 553 ft/lbs of torqhe , or the v12 tdi found in the Audi Q7 which pump out 493hp and 738 ft/lbs of torque stock. Just saying if your taking the time to create a diesel supercar install a engine that  belongs in a supercar.

if money isn't really an issue, you might want to think about diesel/electric hybrid.  well either that, or start machining some seriously tall gears for the transmission. it might take you a while to get up to its top speed, but at least you'll set the record

the audi 2.7 V6 CR TDI is supposed to be *** hot very strong and reliable not like the old 2.5 V6
thats where id go if it was under 3 litres, if the sky was the limit id go touareg V10 as its the most powerfull diesel car in the world off the fore court with 308bhp and 550ftlbs, imagine wen you boost that bad boy up to 30psi
