So i was helping a buddy move / pack up his garage and we came across this unused intercooler he had bought for a GT25R turbo project he had started for his 04 WRX.
Anyway at the end of the day he gave me the intercooler
as payment for my hardwork....lol.
it's a (24x12x3) with 3" inlet's......this thing is pretty much standard size but my poor little K14 could pretty well fit in through the inlet's if i angled it the rightway. I know this is overkill, but it was my favorite price! The car is a 98 gasser 4dr golf, swapped to an 94 AAZ with a k14 (stuck wastegate), fuel's turned up a bit, rover boost pin, boost gauge and EGT's in the mail
Will this just kill my boost flow? Or maybe it's time to upgrade the turbo......any ideas on that as well.
I ended up with one just like yours for a very extreme project that has been scrapped, I too would like to know what the lag would be like with a smaller turbo(in my case a K03 from a 20V 1.8T)
sorry to jack your thread, but I too am interested in the answer you get.

It's waayy too big. Better send it to me to get rid of it...............
well, the bigger the intercooler is the more capable it will be of cooling the intake charge certainly.
the question is about volume induced turbo lag, and if the smaller turbos will be able to blow enough air to compensate for the very large intercooler volume.
I dont know the answer for sure, but my thought is that since a smaller turbo spools earlier, it would be able to fill the volume faster than a larger one, making a small turbo ok, the question then is, is such a big intercooler necessary, or even beneficial?

use it. its just gonna take a tiny bit longer for the turbo to fill it and spool. it will work wonderfully tho. DO IT!
sweet, then maybe you can give me your old one?
I too want to go turbo
Free is one of the best four letter words that start with "F"..
Pressure drop will be negligible with your turbo, just keep the piping as direct as possible..
That is the exact same size I ran on my project.
Works great, get it mounted ASAP!!
hey dan, just thought i would let you know that the front of your car is drop dead sexy...
haha, I thought the same thing after I got mine in the mail. I have a similar 24x12x3 but with 2.5" ends. It worked like a champ with my k14, and now even better with my k24.
P.S. - it fits perfectly in the rad support of a mk1
