Intermediate shaft bearings replaced
« on: August 30, 2009, 09:32:07 pm »
Thanks to all of you who  have added to the FAQ section I was able to replace the intermediate bearings and the oil pump at the same time. But now I need some help with oil pressure. My oil filter housing has no tap for the turbo so it is run off of the head. I have added a T and an oil pressure gauge on the same fitting and I am not getting any oil pressure at the head. is that because the turbo is running off of the same line. I just don;t understand why after installing new oil pump, intermediate shaft bearings, changed oil and filter the pressure is low? any ideas?

I'm going to say that feeding your turbo from the head is a bad idea. It's last in line for both oil flow and oil pressure. When you consider that the oil filter flange is first in line, it just seems like a bad idea to me. You can always drill and tap your oil filter flange.

As to why you have no oil pressure I would guess it's because the turbo is taking all the pressure that the gauge would be seeing but I'm not sure.

is your head gasket in right? did it have oil pressure before you teed into the line there?

X2!!!...you really need to feed your turbo from the oil filter flange...other wise your turbo wont last long.
you will not get enough PSI or even volume from the back of the head...
got yo a junkyard and get a newer oil filter flange with an extra port..thats really gonna be your best bet.

...or tap a steel 1/8" NPT x 5/16" compression fitting into the filter mount,.. and use 5/16" brakeline.

I just finished tapping the filter flange for the oil pressure gauge and turbo feed. I installed a low oil pressure sender in the head. The oil pressure went up to 25 psi right away but after about 5 min of idle it went back down to 0. I am pretty sure the gasket went on correclty because I remember looking for the oval shaped silicone gasket to be in the correct place. What else?  ??? >:(

Gasket is on correctly . Measuring oil pressure at the filter flange and I have a low oil pressure light at the head.
I found two broken oil squirters with the pan down Would those have any effect on oil pressure?

Broken or had they fallen out?

That would definitely have an effect. They come off of a galley that's really close to the oil pump.

Is this an old engine (not rebuilt in the past 300k km)? I would plastigauge the main and rod bearings. I went through a similar situation when I rebuilt my engine. I replaced the IM bearings, oil pump and finally realized I had put in standard mains when I should have used undersized bearings. After that was fixed, pressure went from 0 to 50 psi hot.

I put new mains a couple of weeks ago and they were std and the ones that came out were std as well.

What are all of the things to look for in a low oil pressure motor?
Please add to the list. bad oil pump, worn intermedaite shaft bearings, worn main bearings, cam journal

Since we talked last I replaced the rod bearings, oil pump and intermediate bearings(thanks to the faq section) it went well. Started up great and had like 25 psi at the oil fliter flange. After running for 5 min it started to loose oil pressure until my oil light form the head went on so I shut it down.
Today, I replaced 2 broken oil squirters today and removed the main bearings and they looked good. I am going to replace them anyways. I am going to get plasti guage tomorrow and see what is going on in there. The broken oil jets were just broken at the elbow, but the ball and spring were still in there. Could those two broken jets give a 0psi after the engine is warm.
