I have a 1.6L NA out of a 84 Jetta that im starting to brake down and "rebuild". I wanted to shoot out a few questions if you guys dont mind...
I currently have a 79 1.5L daily with 64,000 OG miles

and would like to rebuild the 1.6L to mimic my 1.5L (simplicity) and drop it into my 83 Caddy ( that was recently posted on
http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=20387.0 and keep the close-ratio trans. (hopefully with a taller 5th

)
First off I wanted to know if it is possible to simplify 1.6 to one v-belt running the WP and ALT only? No AC... Basically replicate my 1.5L... Would I just need one alternator bracket like my 1.5? Would it all line up if I did find a bracket? Or are the mounting holes in the block cast in different spots?
Also, is it easy to dumb down my pump? It looks as though it has some electrical contacts "cruise???" Will this cause problems with the rebuild or can it just be deleted?
I feel like I can answer all the questions I just posted, but I thought it would be worth a second and third opinion from the experienced masses. I could be way off and over looking some key elements.
Thanks!!!!
my 1.6L build is about as simple as it gets
http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=15633.0 other than I added a turbo, have the option of A/C (compressor is mounted but I have not put the belt on yet) and I put it in a Dodge !
My engine only has a 12v wire going to the IP from the ignition circuit. I have a green sensor like on my dash so I can see its on. I have pimped the glow plugs using a stop relay but my own switches and individual wires to each GP. That is the ONLY power going to the engine. I have all "steam gauges" for temp, oil, volts, and boost. Nothing connected to the IP other than throttle cable and the mentioned 12v.
Oh yeah, that build is awesome! Good Work!
i'm running a 1.6 with just a water pump and alternator. just have to find the right bracket
Head bolt number 5 stripped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate the world right now.

All the rest came out fine. WTF?
Going to drill out with better drill tomorrow. Mines only a 9.8V

Need 18V and better bit.
Minor set back. Or i Hope...........................
Get a torch and warm those babies up! good work Joe, you should be able to make the 1.6 very simple. just stay away from the pimp daddy stuff like music and a/c

Thanks Ben. Would you be able to hook me up with a taller 5th? Or let me buy the wire harness out of that other caddy that is rotting away... Drove Jesse's truck yesterday... Sounds great! Running the Camshaft vent hose out to the ground. Haha. I knew that was your doing... Its making oil and fuel stains in front of my house as I type.

Yeah, it always amazes me how much some heat helps things move :-) Even propane / MAP is better than nothing.
Keep at it, there are always problems in life but that's what keeps if from being boring ;-)
UPDATE:

Drilled through the stripped HB.
Pulled the head and to my surprise... NO CRACKS!

Not even between the valves.
I have not been in the bottom end yet, but I will be getting an engine stand tonight.
I think we are out of tall trannies but those can come and go easily. Don't worry about it till you get the engine ready. They can be found relatively easy. What other parts are you going to need help with? Jesse's truck has problems that need attention and No one knows how to fix them cheap I am afraid. I am going to kill him for buying weird stuff and not checking it out first!

Poor Jesse...

It needs rings doesnt it... I need the wire harness for the diesel truck. I have a cluster. Do you have a black dash?
Went to Nye's and talked to Marc. He shot me some fair prices on boring and honing the block. He cant resurface the head because of the pre chamber inserts (does not have right equipment), but lets just hope the head is straight and he can clean it up real nice...

It all seems to good to be true on this 250k engine...
Really, a lot of stuff I pulled from the engine looked to be its first time ever leaving...

Maybe it was in one of those cars you hear everyone else talk about... You know the ones that say they have never had to replace a thing and they have had the car for 15 years/200k... I hade a teacher in high school that always talked about his Mazda that had a 1/4 of a million.
