A quick question!
« on: August 17, 2009, 06:37:40 pm »
Hey guys,

I'm in the process of freshening up my AAZ, and I am currently installing all new seals on the timing belt side, as well as a new timing belt and tensioner. Earlier this evening I did the intermediate shaft seal and o-ring, along with the cam seal. The next step was to remove the crank sprocket and get at the front main seal. Unfortunately to do this, I had to take the cam out in order to be able to spin the crank to get it oriented to get the bolt off. Do you think the new seal is now garbage? Or can I reuse it?

Thanks!

So long as the seal is not PTFE (teflon), then you should be fine. Those are gray with a really thin lip. They also take a special tool to install. Real basturds those are.

I've reused the regular rubber seals before.

Just make sure you push it up against the shoulder of the #1 cam journal CAREFULLY, and then tighten down the cam cap.

In theory, you're supposed to work the #2 and # 4 cam caps down slowly until the cam is seated. Then, you can adjust the cam seal if necessary, and then install the other 3 caps. Or, do the #2 and #4 caps, and then slip the cam seal back on.
