oil cooler replacement?
« on: July 30, 2009, 08:10:08 am »
I just rebuilt a 1.6td. Do I need to replace the oil cooler if the cooler didn't leak? Is it possible to flush the cooler out on the oil side? It looks like the oil filter would pick up anything that may be in there? The intermediate bearings were worn before rebuild.
Thankyou

if it had clean oil going through it before, then its most likely fine. you didnt blow an engine up and run tons of bearings through the oil system did you? and as long as it didnt leak oil into the coolant, you should be good to go. just replace all the o rings for it.

The oil goes sump, coarse screen, pump, cooler, filter, main galleries, bearings, sump. So I would not worry  as any gash hiding in the cooler has to go through the filter next, and stay there. Less hopefull if you leave the filter change too long at the next service and the bypass in the filter opens up. :'(
