Jetta 1.6 TD glow plug control unit
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:31:29 am »
Can someone help me out?

I have mentioned this thingy here before, but I still haven't been able to find out what and how this little piece of kit does.

As it happens, the Golf and Jetta 1.6 TD models with intercooler, namely engine types RA and SB , came with a special
glow plug control unit, that other IDI D's and TD's did not have.

The glow plug control unit ( as mentioned in ETKA ) is VW part number 191 911 261 A
and the thing sits bolted onto the firewall, on the engine room side. It's nearly at the top of the firewall, just left of the brake fluid container. The big plus cable that goes to the glow plugs connects to this control unit, and the glow plug fuse is integrated into this control unit. There also must be a relay there, since the other end of the plus cable seems to go directly to the battery plus (although I am not 100% sure, it's been a while since it was all together)

Now, three small wires attach to the control unit with a 3-pin connector. Maybe that's relay control, glow plug light and ground? But who could tell me??? I am beyond puzzled on how I should do my new wires ( I intend to ditch this old control unit entirely).

Funny thing is the traditional glow plug relay (same as on all VW IDIs) sits on the fuse box just like on all other IDIs.
SO, there must be two relays, plus feed with one fuse, and a three-pin connector involved in the glow plug operation.

Bentley manual doesn't contain info on this control unit AT ALL. Even VW dealer mechanics tell me they don't recognise the part. But it IS original VW part, I am 100% sure, and it came with OE intercooled 1.6 TDs.

Please, someone help me out and tell me which wire is which!
Or, if someone can tell me with which original wires I could connect a new, custom relay control for my plugs so I could just ignore the control unit, that would be fine too.

Thanks a bunch!

Could these be the mystery relays on the firewall that you are talking about?

Thanks, but no..
The system I'm talking about is only for the glow plugs, I just need to figure out how the thing works so I can replace it with a traditional system.

didn't the electrical schematic I sent you give any answers to that?

I sold my one and went "classical" (ie: typical MK1 diesel) so can't take it appart  :(
