question - differences between 86 and 92 pump and turbo
« on: July 13, 2009, 07:44:56 am »
I have a 92 eco diesel - and I have (I think) the opportunity to pick up an injection pump and turbo (actually a complete engine) from an 86 jetta.
My questions - will the turbo and pump from the 86 fit and work on my eco? I've been looking for a turbo and pump to replace the eco style with the regular style but some replacement parts listings I've found imply that the pump might be different

thanks for input on this!
The fleet
92 eco diesel (my driver turned project)
94 suburban (mine)
69 Chevelle 327 w/hillborn - resting nicely
89 Jetta coupe (sons 16v ABA head swap w/turbo and megasquirt - not run yet)
2000 jetta (other sons)
98 jetta (daughters)
2001 jetta tdi (girlfriends)
03 subaru outback (girlfrie

I thought the stock ECO turbo was set to 5 psi - so I presume you are talking about the boost of the stock 86 turbo?

I didnt intend to increase boost - my main intent is to get the real turbo pump.

I posted a different question asking about my wastegate - on the back of the eco wastegate is a recessed hex head screw with a locknut on it.
Is this an indicator that the eco wastegate is adjustable?
I dont know and I havent found any pix showing how to adjust regular or eco wastegates.
thanks!

just disconnect the wastegate if you want more boost, or add a manual boost controller to the line going to the WG. and eco diesels have between 8 - 12 psi boost. not 5. the turbo pump is just going to make your mileage go in the can. im pretty sure the eco uses 130 bar injectors too, you are gonna want the 155 bar ones out of the turbo motor. if you put the T3 on there, an intercooler, turbo injectors, a  better intake manifold and the turbo pump, you would make some good power. and if you turn the screw in on the WG, you get more boost.

No - the eco uses 155 bar injectors.
I've played back and forth with 261's at 160 and 308's at 155 cant make up my mind which I like better.

And I dont know how to identify the turbos by these numbers (like "T3")

I dont understand the concept of an intercooler on a diesel - as I thought they needed heat.
(I do understand intercooler on gas engines though)
