as far as where i got the engine, i had it imported from quality german auto parts on the net. I made em do a compression test and tell me the values before i bought it. pretty good folks to deal with. not cheap but everything seemed the up and up. supposedly had 78,000 miles. it looked about right from the condition of the hoses and such. good crate, fast shipping, went out of their way to put up with all my requests.
to answer the front end question, I ordered some type II jetta springs and new strut inserts for a type one and put the springs on. it was a *** to do but once i got ahold of an impact driver it was a breeze. it lifted the front end up about 2.5 inches and the ride is about the same as before. passat wheels and tires fit perfectly. now to zip out the fenders and extend em
