Plunger shim question
« on: July 09, 2009, 07:58:49 am »
My pump I just taken apart I found that the face cam plate and the rollers were pitted from sitting around with water in it. Now the pump did operate properly besides the fact it was leaking a little bit of fuel. I ordered a new cam plate and rollers from vwdiesel.com . When I received it I noticed that the new cam plate was made a little different. The new cam plate looks as if the 2mm shim or spacer is already machined into the plate, were as the old cam plate is almost flat and then with the added spacer it looks like the new one. When I tried adding the 2mm spacer to the new one it looked to high (doubled up) so I did not install that spacer and put the pump back together. I have not started the car yet, simply because the more I thought about it I felt I should make sure with someone with experince in these pumps. I have tried to contact vwdiesel.com tech through email and they are saying "as long as the plunger is not bottoming out with the spacer, then leave it in". basicly I'm looking for a opinion or maybe ,hopefully you have seen this before and be able to point me in the right direction. Also what is the purpose of the 2mm shim or spacer?

Thanks ,
Jason W

I'm not the expert here, see if the thicknesses of your old shim and the machined in shim are the same, if they're the same then I doubt you need 'em both.

A while ago Libbybapa wrote that the shim adjusts the starting and stopping of injection.

Actually maybe put the plunger and camplate together and stand 'em up on a table, then measure from the tip of the plunger to the table, comparing with your old camplate untill you see what you need to do.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.
