Now that I've fixed the leaky injection pump (replaced distributor head O-ring), I checked my fuel consumption and it is around 43 MPG doing 80% hwy (between 55 to 75 mph) and 20% city stop and go. Is that about right for an Ecodiesel with a 5 spd manual? Brakes are not dragging. There is a shimmy in the steering and I have not had the wheels balanced or checked alignment. How much can shimmy, wheel balance and wheel alignment affect fuel economy?

That's exactly what mine was getting until it went down to 30ish, and i'm still pulling my hair out trying to figure out why

Why not? I can hit 52 mpg on most tanks. Although I do have a NA so that's a totally different ball game.

Driving highway 80% of the time with a stock eco trans probably doesn't help..

Haven;t check my diesel milage in a while But I'm pulling about 47 on WVO...

Your car should have an AVX trans I believe...   Basically it hs a really low final drive gear ratio, something like 4.25:1
Pretty much any of the diesel 5 speeds woudl be a help, I believe the other MKII diesel transmissions have a 3.941:1 final drive.... 

I have an ACH in my rabbit which works pretty dandy...

High 50's on my usual bimbling around town and 60 on a run.

UK spec 'eco' TD AAZ.

i have a 92 Eco and i got 46 on my last tank, about a 50/50 mix of city and highway.

regcheeseman., you in the UK? Is that in imperial gallons? Are UK speedos in miles or km?
I thought Eco diesels were only imported to California for emissions and no where else?

We got them in Michigan too even though we don't have emmision tests. Some here get 50 mpg (US gal & miles) - the top speed is what kills your mpg - double the speed and the drag increases 4x. If you can keep it to 60 mph, then 50 mpg should be do-able for the highway. 43 mpg combined while doing 75 is good !
