Hi everyone!
I have a volvo with the 2,4 litre idi vw engine.... sometimes when it is at low revs and no load, it starts to make a clattering noise like a valve lifter was not working, but it also starts to misfire on one cylinder.
Could it be the injector?
Thanks yet again for a great and very active forum!
It could be either. If the lifter is crapping out it either won't let any air in or air out of that cylinder and cause a misfire. Best to pull the valve cover and check the lifters. I don't have a bentley handy but I think you get the engine up to temp, pull the VC and press down on the lifters with a non metallic tool. If it compresses it's bad, if not it's good.
I'm not sure how things work in your area of the world but over here most diesel shops will test old injectors for free so it may be worthwhile to pull yours and have them tested.
Since I have an extra set of injectors I will send them off for overhaul I think I will try to do the test of the lifters tomorrow If there is time... promised to take my son to see the tractorpulling contest tomorrow aswell...
