GT1749VA Turbo, integral manifold anyone used one?
« on: June 30, 2009, 01:14:32 am »
I work at a VW dealer and we have 3 of these turbos lying around that I can have for free once they are past warranty period. One has touched the impeller housing on blades so not much use apart from spares, the other 2 were changed purely due to a little noise and were functioning fine.

So basically I have 3 to use/abuse.

Now the part numbers are 03G 253 014 H and are GT1749VA turbos but they have the manifold and housing all as a single cast piece, has anyone used one of these and did they just cut the housing and weld on a flange?

I am in New Zealand  ;D

And due to the fact they are ex warranty I really can't sell them, I can use them but not sell.

they wont fit in a mk2/3 based car due to the rear engine mount, I've tried! you can make up a steel mount to replace the ally mount and it will fit. they are a bit restrictive but for free who cares? 160whp would be easy for one of those!

My vehicle is a Skoda Pickup so lots of space down the back :D

What do you mean restrictive? I am running a K24 just now and it is rather laggy, love the idea of big boost low down.....

you either get big boost down low, or big boost up high. and the VNT's dont do a very good job of boosting way up high in my oppinion. almost no lag if you have a good one tho. when my turbo was alot newer, it would spool the second you jumped on the smoke pedal.

Quite a few people have used that style in rabbits and caddy's.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

So you mean I might get 23psi down low but it will tail off where just now my K24 is pulling 22psi but not until the top.  ;D

no, you wont get 23 down low. you would probably bend rods with 23psi if you were under 2500 rpms. i get 15 psi at about 2500 on my engine, and it has so much torque. i can use 5th gear from 20mph clear up to the governor.. i dont know why anyone would really want any more torque than what i have right now, because it burns off the tires from a 1st to 2nd shift, burns them a little bit 2nd to 3rd, and chirps them going 3rd to 4th. you will need LOTS OF BLACK SMOKE to make lots of boost down low. my car would boost alright down low when i had the fuel turned down. but then i turned up the fuel screw until i couldnt see behind me when i was accelerating, then the little beast came alive. really grunts hard down low after i turned up the smoke.

but it seems like around 4500 or so these turbos run out of efficiency, they just kinda top out and never really gain more boost. one of these with a compound normal turbo would probably be an amazing combination.

oh yea, all the hills around here, even hills my dads duramax truck has to shift down for, i just pedal a little more boost in 5th gear and go up the hills however fast i want to.

I pretty much don't ever rev over 4,500...

For me 4500 in fifth is 109mph :D. Found that here, http://www.scirocco.org/gears/ ,sadly not from experience. I revved that high once or twice down hill ::), usually only 3500 if I'm hot roddin' 8).

Ok I am set then, loads of torque is what I want  ;D

Will get other engine on stand and start to mock up. A compound with teh K24 sounds good but would probably kill my engine and I want it as a daily drive/second car.
