Clutch set up for Vanagon TDI swap
« on: June 30, 2009, 05:17:03 am »
What is the preferred set up for a Vanagon TDI swap at 50 degrees?  I will be running pp520's and a chip.  Whats the beefiest set up?  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

I always install the 1Z/AHU flywheel and clutch assembly, now that HA-Projekt supplies the nice replacement tranny input shafts to match the TDI clutch disc. Note that there are two small tabs jutting from the TDI pressure plate that should be bent flat (hammer down) and also one small spot of clearancing needed inside the bell housing.

Thanks for the info Karl.  I will look into the HA Projekt input shaft.  I like the idea I can use fairly readily available parts this way.  Thanks

Does anyone have a convenient source for the T3-TDI input shafts? HA-Project website does not list them... Notter motorsport has them, but only takes wire transfer payments (200 euros w/ shipping & taxes :o)

Gasser or diesel bellhousing?

I would never run the gasser bell housing and adaptor plate, the TDI's torque will flex and distort the plate and possibly pull threads. (I've seen it happen more than once) The diesel bell is the best way to go @50 degrees, the Overland/Eurospec (mexican) bell for 15 degree setups. No more reason to use adaptor plates.  8)

HA-Projekt was getting 120 euros + 32 shipping. No reason to have to pay any taxes. Gotta pay to play. These shafts make the job so much nicer.

Agreed, I have no problem paying for it, but I'm trying to avoid the VAT... HA Projekt does not have them on the website.

I wish I'd known about these before I put the bellhouse on and sealed up the output flanges :P I take it the TDI flywheel & clutch are larger, and w/ a higher clamping force? Otherwise, I was considering the VR6 pressure plate...

I think something crashed on HA's website, it appears to be an older version. I'd email them to check. I just sent an email to them through eBay since that's how I got my last one and need a couple more.

The TDI flywheel uses a 228mm disc, same as wbx and VR6. the VR6 PP bolts right up, but as with the TDI PP you need to bend over the two tangs that stick up and also be sure to transfer a TDC mark from your old DV flywheel/clutch.

Karl I've heard your feelings on the adaptor plate before but since its what I have & since I sprung for one of your tdi starter adapters its going to stay! I may remake it in steel tho...

Any thoughts on the best clutch upgrade to use when using the gasser bellhousing on a tdi setup??

Kennedy makes upgraded pressure plates that should work.

What if building from ground zero; new DK tranny with modified TDI input shaft, new AHU engine, LUK clutch/flywheel, with the DV BH, but none of the existing DV flywheel/clutch components exist.

Why would you need to transfer the old DV to the new setup? I'm missing something.
