Pull the Injectors or leave them in... Need Advice
« on: June 28, 2009, 05:16:09 pm »
A year and a half ago, long before I knew of this site, I attempted to remove the injectors from my 1991 Jetta and one of the injector boss completly broke off the head.  I pulled the head and had it welded up and it has lasted until a few days ago and when I pulled the injector due to a significant leak the threads stripped out.  Today I bought a complete 1.6 with tranny that came out of 1990 Golf and was running when it was pulled.  I don't know the mileage or how old/condition the injectors are.  I plan on taking the head off that motor, installing it on the motor in the Jetta and then rebuilding the Golf motor and eventually putting it in the Jetta.

The question I have is, the injectors in the Jetta motor are ones I bought from DieselVW and have about 15,000 miles on them and appear to be in good condition.  Should I attempt to pull the injectors out of the Golf head so that I can install the known good injectors from the Jetta or leave them installed and see how they perform after the head swap?

What I am nervous of is breaking a boss on this new to me head and being back to square one with a broken head.

I have read about the proceedure of always pushing towards the head when removing and installing injectors but is there anything else I can do to prevent breaking a boss if I have to remove these injectors?  Is using an impact gun, going 1/4 out 1/8 in safer?

Thanks
Steve

Before you start on the removal, a few days before in fact, thoroughly soak the threads with the penetrant of your choice. I like P'Blaster, but others have used Kroil (I think) and some folks swear by simple things like WD40.

Soak them. Use the whole can if it makes you feel better.

My tool of choice is a deep 27mm impact socket and a 3/4" drive T-bar. Go slow, go steady, don't get impatient and you won't crack the head.

When you install the injectors you're going to run, lightly coat the threads with a little film of antiseize, they'll come out easier next time.

Thanks.  After I broke the head and had it welded I used antisieze on the threads and they come out easy now.

When you say a T bar, that's a breaker bar with a T type handle, right?  Or are using a impact gun with the impact socket?

Thanks

It's a breaker bar that you can slide the handle from one end to another. Effectively it gives you an adjustable length handle, which can be useful.

The impact socket was the only one I found that was deep enough to take the injector, and I use a 3/4 drive to 1/2" drive adapter to use the t-bar.

Personally I do not use an impact tool unless I absolutely must.

KROIL. Made here in Nashville, Tennessee. GREAT STUFF. Let it soak overnite, and you're good to go.

You can order online. I think they have a special online for like $16 for 2 cans (retails for like $12/can).

I can't have enough around my shop.

I will check locally for it.  In the meantime I already sprayed them down with WD-40 due to the fact that I need more PB Blaster as well.

Thanks

I used to use the kroil and then Blaster, but Free All is definately the best product I have ever used. I sell all of these and more, and I also have used them all, Free All is the only thing I buy now. Made in Cleveland, OH. As far as the injector itself if the head is in the car installed then push the bar towards the driver and passenger seats instead of pulling the bar towards the radiator. Good luck.

I had one injector that was packed with carbon. Nothing I could do would budge it (head off)

Finaly I used an impact gun on the lowest setting. Letting it "rattle" a little it tapped the injector out. It took a little while. At first it didn't seem like there was any movement but it eventually came out.
