Oh Noes; my Injection Pump is leaking :(.

Hi guys;
It's been a while since I've been here but I just had the WORST Winter of my life as I was sick with stupid CANCER!! WTF?! I'm under 40 and healthy; I'm not supposed to get farking cancer!?
Anyway, I'm feeling better these days and just trying to live my life cuz ya just never know; any day might be yer last!
So without further ado :p I've been driving my Rabbit for the past 2 months and it's been great, but I haven't been able to make Biodiesel as fast as I need so I've had to fill up a few time with the ULSD stuff from Sunoco or B20 blend; and now the seals on my IP have started to leak!
Gah! I have a spare IP which I can get rebuilt, but I've never actually replaced one before.
Do I have to do the timing belt when I replace the IP? or is it just plug and play??
I think I can take it out, but might have to resort to a shop to put the rebuilt one back in. Anybody around London/KW/Stratford area know Mk1 IDI Diesels any more!?!?
I'm very picky about my car and do most of the work on it myself or with friends, but this might be beyond me
.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

you could attempt the hillbilly fix of two stroke oil and or some atf... some kind of concoction?
it wouldn't be a bad time to replace the timing belt if its never been done before, or at least inspect it for cracks/wear.
where exactly is the pump leaking from?

Thanks for the idea; hillbilly fix; haha
Anyway, I have had the timing belt done; twice actually since I've had the car (got it in 2004). I had to replace the water pump so had to redo the TB at that time again. I had a local guy do it who knew old VWs inside and out, but he passed away last year so that really sucks
. Not only was he a friend of the family; he was the best old school VW mechanic I knew!
It appears to be leaking from the bottom; Biodiesel dripping all over my water pump
. Doh; so I just cleaned it and figure I'll do that to nurse it through this week (we have our really HUGE VW Show next weekend and I don't want to miss that!
) so after that, I'll pull the pump and see what I can do! I am hoping to find someone local who can rebuild the pump (i.e. replace the seals) and then re-install it and do the TB. If I didn't have to do the TB, it would be OK, but I'm just not comfortable doing that myself cuz it's sooo critical!!

i know a polish guy who would know that car inside and out... but he lives in Whitby.
i wouldn't buy a new TB if you've kept up on it. taking the pump off doesn't disturb it much at all. the timing will need to be set though obviously. i drove my car for probably 200km+ while diesel fuel was leaking right onto my lower coolant hose. no problems, and hose was fine for another 2 years. i'd say to put a catch can or something for the time being.

I'll work on your car for bio
Unless the belt has been covered in fuel I wouldn't change it.

Hey Tyler;
Well, that I can do!
However, I live near Stratford! Are you willing to make the trip?? We can make a batch of fuel and have a BBQ while you're here if you like?? Maybe we can even turn this into a GTG
.
The only catch is; next weekend is June Jitter Bug in the Falls, and I can't possibly miss that!
so I'm going; leaking IP or not (OR I may take my boring Mk2 Jetta
), so the following Saturday would be doable. Anyway, let me know!
Thanks!

Yikes that's pretty far away. I'll have to see what's what as the week goes on. I won't be able to come out this weekend, that's for sure

Scully, give Joe Rouken in St Marys a call. (519) 349-2718. Another old european diesel guy, got a thing for perkins engines but works on them all..... He might be able to get you up and running this week. Probably has a seal kit on the shelf, and you'll see all kinds of neat diesel stuff like a John Deere powered Mercedes bus, Perkins powered Frieghtliner pickup, etc.

Scully,
Sorry to hear about your health problems but glad to hear you're doing better. Anyway, if you get to where you need a shop to work on the car, I would recommend
http://www.wernersauto.com/
. They are in Cambridge which is still a bit of a drive for you. I had them do a timing belt on my car because I didn't have time and I felt they treated me fairly. They are VW specialists and seem to know diesels very well.
