98 Jetta - AC four pin connector - wire color hook up ?
« on: July 25, 2009, 12:57:44 am »
Well after more than a year I finally got my sweet sounding TDI 98 Jetta running like a champ - now onto the the AC - one man's amenities is another mans necessities - with me living in Houston TX for me it is the the later!

I have a four pin - F 129 - AC pressure switch - connections are labeled 1-4.
The color of my wires are Green/Lilac or Green/Blue, Green/Red, Light Blue or Lilac, and Black/Yellow. I have searched my Bentley Manual and none of the wiring diagrams show these colors. All diagrams do show Black/Yellow to hook up to pin 4 and while some show the wire with Red Tracer to be either pins 2 or 3 but none of the diagrams show any blue or lilac color wire hooking up to any of the AC pressure switch connections. Yes it is F 129
Considering that my eyes are 56 yrs old and this is with magnifying glass but hopefully my heart is still young -at least my lead food is -
I now could easily check to see if my black/yellow goes to ground - that was what I would put on pin 4 correct ?, then pin three wire goes to the control module - which pin does it go to on this big connector?, pin 2 goes to AC cutoff relay ? where is this located ? and pin 1 goes to ambient temp switch - and well I have been looking for that - manual says it is by dual horns on front bumper passenger side - but I cannot locate it there - ??

I am open to suggestions and or corrections -
Thanks
Stephen

I find  at the F129 - #1-green /blue ,#2-green/ lilac, #3-green/red,#4-black/green. I do remember to check if the switch is defective you can short #1 and 2 to make the compressor work. The other problem i've seen is the wire to the ambient temp sensor-F38. It's in series between the fan control and #1 on the pressure  [F129]switch.

The ambient temp sensor is located under the drivers windshield cowel, by the wiper motor and alarm horn.
I have had issues with my A/C as well and it ended up being the A/C pressure switch which is screwed into the bottom side of the accumulator. The accumulator is located underneath the passenger side front bumper close to the horn. You can unplug the four pin connector and unscrew the pressure switch without loosing any freon because there's a valve behind it.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

This helps! Thanks!

I now get my compressor to turn over by turning on AC but I only get 70 psi on both low and high sides which is probably the pressure coming from the freon container. I banged on the compressor a bit while spinning - no luck - it has been sitting for a couple of years and I did not condition prior to buying vehicle so I will probably need to buy a new one or is there a fairly easy way to take of back of compressor and loosen up what ever might be stuck open?

Murrys compressor from Napa is $419.40

Temp Products compressor from Car Quest is $348.34
and their Sanden is $280

Are Sanden compressors any good?
Thanks for the info and help!

Sanden is the OEM brand.  Is the AC clutch engaging at all?
