Any one ever thought of using a Gasser alternator with a tach wire on it?
From the tach's perspective that should work just fine.
From rest of the car's perspective.... the gasser alternator is usually significantly smaller (ie 65A on an MK2 iirc) vs the beefier diesel version (90A, again iirc) which means it may struggle a bit to charge a cold battery while running the defrost fan, rear window defogger, and headlights. MC Hammer thumping on the stereo won't help either.

Once again, I'd say it all comes down to the immortal words of Clint Eastwood:

Do you feel lucky, punk? Well, do ya?
If you live in a warm climate where your battery is always in a good state of charge and you don't need your glowplugs much you're probably in ok shape. In Edmonton there's mornings I'd like 120 Amps... all of them channeled towards the heated seats.
