injector removal problem
« on: May 27, 2009, 05:10:04 am »
My machine shop called to inform me that the head I gave with a stuck injector is cross threaded - someone installed it crooked - as in towards the head.. hes saying that if they try to take it out - the head will become junk - any ideas - can the threads be restored with helicoil or something similar?

when I tried with a 27mm 12 point deep socket that I use, it wouldnt budge - I was trying it dry though..

The welding/machine shop I use can fix just about anything. I took a head with cracked threads in and he welded it. He needed a junk injector to get the threads correct and in the right location, but he did it. It was really close to the cost of finding another head though. If they are a decent shop and have 3 other holes to find out and reverse engineer it they should be able to do it once the head comes off. THe only other thing is getting a new head or at least that is all I would know about.

its not cracked - the injector is stuck in the head crooked and not seated fully, Ive repaired spark plug threads with a junk plugs hacksawed threads - came out fine, but an injector threads are massive compared to a spark plug

I think its best to install the head - run it and soak it in WD40 for a week or 2 and then remove it while hot, then I can get working on the thread repair - best not to heat the head while off the block - This head has absolutely no cracks between valves

heat that *** up off the engine. ive done it plenty of times before. just use a propane torch, since they dont really get hot enough to damage anything. ive used propane on aluminum heads plenty of times. i know i would be able to get it out, but the injector would be garbage when i were done with it, or it would at least need a good overhaul. lol. i dont think these injectors can stand up to the kinda heat that a torch is going to put out. oh yea, if the repair job is going to cost anything over about 100 bucks? i would just throw another hundred or 2 on top of that and get a brand skanky new head.
