Couple of  questions though, when its cold I pull the cold lever out slightly to increase the idle speed which isnt nessesary but I prefer faster idle when cold. For the first minute or so if I have the window down and I accelerate a bit it sounds kinda more diesely :). Nothing I'm worried about but almost as if it was a little too advanced. However after a minute or so when there is a bit of warmth in the cylinders this dissapears and makes its usual diesel but not diesely noise, if that makes any sense at all.

I think that is caused by the sudden temperature change in the combustion chamber as the fuel ignites in the cold engine

my engine does this exact same thing. even kinda misses every once in a while when its cold unless the CS is pulled out. my engine definitely rattles more with the advance pulled out. but it idles so much more smooth. i used to have starting/timing issues, but i put my franken-turbo-pump on my engine, timed it CORRECTLY, and it runs so nice now.

oh yea, does yours smoke blue if you dont let it warm up much and then drive it?

The car used to smoke blue until it warmed up. Since then I've advanced it and this has completely disappeared.

Thats good to know about the diesely sound lol.

One other thing, when started at temps below say 10 degrees C, the engine fires instantly and idles fine however it kind of misses for 3-7 seconds. There is no smoke but the engine kind of jumps a bit though the rev counter stays still. I'm thinking this may indicate low compression as it did it before the new head and new injectors. Having said that the bores looked pretty much brand new so I can't really understand that.

I'm pretty happy with the timing now and as it doesn't smoke whatsoever I may turn the max fuel screw ever so slightly just to maybe get a tiny bit of smoke when it is being floored. Don't worry as I dont have a egt gauge, when I say slightly im mean very slightly as Ive sunk a rather large amount of money into it.  ::)

Edit: Stroke of luck, the thread below this is about exactly the missing problem. Think I will head off to get a new mann fuel filter on monday (only one I havent replaced since I got the car). Do I have to fill the filter up as I dont have any diesel in a jerry can or could I just fit it and crank till it fills?

ive just put a dry filter on, left the fuel in the pump, and fired it up. usually it will fill the filter back up before the pump runs out of fuel.
