diesel wiring loom into gas vanagon ?

Is this very common?  I want to use the diesel loom in my syncro and was wondering what to do with the original wiring. Should I remove it all and start from scratch with the diesel wiring loom?
 
Also is it even possible to remove the diesels loom with out cutting it apart?

Just looking for advice as I have never tackled a wiring job this big before.  thanks,

Thanks Andrew.   Great Ideas.  Would you just cut the original wiring off at the engine compartment and not really remove them completely? This seems like it would be the simpler route.

Also I was planning on using the diesel guage cluster.  Is this advisable or a waste of time, since I was planning on wiring my glow plugs like in the FAQ.
