2001 TDI Oil Pooling

Just bought a 2001 golf TDI and I just noticed that there is oil pooling to the right side of the engine cover. Pics are here http://img185.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=94432319.jpg
The car runs great, but if i'm going to be running into a big issue down the road it would be nice to know.

Ok, some new symptoms have arrived.  When driving today between 60 and 70km/h, it seemed as if my car couldn't make up it's mind what gear it wanted to be in, it would drop to 1500rpms and up to 2500rpms.  Is this the transmission or the turbo?  Is this turbo surge?  Thanks

looks like either your vacuum pump seal is leaking or your valve cover gasket needs a dab of silicone in the corners....as far as the tranny these are failure prone....good luck

sometimes changing the automatic tranny fluid helps with shifting... at least for me anyways.  i've also used the lucasoil transmission additive with great results. it thickens the fluid up a bit so it works better in extreme conditions where the regular fluid can fail.  by thickening up the fluid, it will help bring the pressures back up to spec so you get smooth shifting.  similar to getting a thicker oil to keep engine oil pressures up.

but then again, your weird shifting could just be quirky electronics or a sensor gone bad.

My approach to situations like this is to clean the area really really well so that you can find out exactly where the oil is coming from.

For small areas you can sometimes clean things well enough with a can of brake-drum cleaner... larger areas will often require a soak of engine degreaser followed up with a garden hose.

With a clean engine it's usually pretty obvious once the oil starts to ooze back... in this case it certainly could be the vacuum pump seal, particularly if someone cheated and didn't replace it when the timing belt was last replaced.
