02a tranny in diesel?
« on: April 16, 2009, 08:44:03 am »
i just bought a blown gasser rabbit with an auto tranny so im pulling all that and throwing in a diesel and 5 speed. i also have a 02a corrado tranny sitting in my garage with low miles. my question is has anyone on here ran an 02a tranny from a corrado or passat with their diesel? i looked over the gear ratios and it seems nice on paper, just wanna know how it feels in real world. i know that there is more fab work to get the tranny to work but im familiar with that. any input would be great.

The 02A Corrado transmissions are all pretty close-ratio with a fairly high final drive, not the best for a Diesel.  The VR6 02A obviously won't bolt on either so you'd be stuck with the G60 trannys.

Other than gaining power holding capability, it's not worth the effort of fabricating mounts and installing the cable shifter and hydro clutch.

Some 02A's might be nice.  This is what I have sitting in the garage with a full hydro swap set up, and half a mechanical clutch setup for it.

Check out the FAQ section.  I listed all the various 02A tranny's and the gear ratio's.

I did.  I decided to get the short block cleaned up and bored out while I had it laying around.  I dropped it off a little while ago at my friends machine shop for a hot tank, magnaflux, bore and hone.  Going to 2nd oversize I belive.  Having the crank checked and polished while it is out.  Will have the rods checked as well.  Gonna install all new bearings etc.  I will see what it works out to when he gets to it.

Do the 02a gearboxes still use the patent suicide rivets on the crownwheel?

Ya but that's not a Corrado transmission, I was saying I don't think the Corrado version would be best suited for a diesel.

They do, but for some reason they don't really seem to fail like the 020's did.  It's generally accepted that the 02A's were the stronger of the 02A/02J family of boxes.  Though the 02A's sometimes would have synchro problems, the 02J's had differential problems.  People seem to think the 02J's have a better shift tower and a better feel, I tend to agree with that, the 02A in my Corrado is pretty sloppy.  People have switched out the 02J shifter/tower in the 02A box and it works quite well, so I've heard.
