intercooler questions?
« on: April 03, 2009, 10:21:52 am »
ok, i bought a really cheap intercooler yesterday (for 18 dollars) and it mesures out 16 x 23.. its a bit bigger than i thought when i found it at the u-pull-it yard. the inlet and outlet JUST fit around the radiator, but im gonna have to do some modifying to the core support if i end up using it. its 3 inches taller than my rad and i would have to modify my core support to use it. so i could drop about 3.5 inches of the IC into the bottom of the support. but is this unit too big to do any good on this small of an engine? its got 2.25 in/out and its not that thick. the core is about 1.5" thick. just a stock volvo 740 intercooler.

and do you think i could find a damn turbo badge at the junk yard? HELL NO! the only, and like, i mean the only one in the whole yard.. was on a mercedes, and it even said turbo diesel already, so i had my way with that also. but i was so excited with all my cheap finds that i totally forgot to take the turbo off the merc 300SD. i think im gonna go back and get it, but would it work any good as a single turbo on my 1.5? or would it just be too big and LAAAAAGG like a mother? ive kinda gotten spoiled by the vnt's instant spool up.

thanks for all the answers..
-Kevin

Intercooler can't really be too big, at least not one that will fit on your car between grille and radiator.

The 300 DT turbocharger should be a nice upgrade for a 1.5 IDI, of course laggier than standard, but an upgrade turbo will always be more laggy - VNTs being the exception.
