Your young and its ontario, for them you are automaticly a street racer and they charge high rates because its supose to keep the reckless ones off the road, but most accidents i hear about is 16 year olds driving daddys Audi

My VW is the most expensive car I have ever had to insure, and I only carry liability on everything....

I asked my agent about it and the answer made some sense I guess..   Since they are are essentially made of tinfoil, have no ABS or death, err airbags the possibilty of you or a passenger being injured is greater..  In Pennsylvania you are required to carry minimally $5000 of first party medical benefits..  And I notice that is even higher on the VW than sy the '79 Lincoln...

And bottom line they want to you go buy a brand new car and carry full coverage so they can make more money...

I spun off my parents insurance when I turned 21..  They had been with the same company since they started driving in the 50's.... That helped out alot right there..  Plus I'm a member of a couple groups that gives me further discounts.. I'm almost 30 now,  I have 7 speeding violations (all 20mph+ over) one suspension and no accidents in the last three years..  For work I carry an extra option that I can crash other people's cars and my insurance will pick up the tab..

RBC insurance, when everyone else quoted me 2800, they quoted me 1300 a year, 1 ticket, 1 suspension.

Well I'm 19, No tickets, No Suspensions. The car and myself are under my mothers flawless 32 year record. I don't understand why they are gouging me so bad! I mean im in the range of 5100-5300 a year. Pathetic. I drive a 1984 76hp Volkswagen 4 door. What can they possibly think im doing!?!?!

I hate Ontario.. Not only that but my damn car is to old to qualify for a really good cheap online insurance :(

well belair reduced my insurance to $95 a month.  woohoo!

i'd honestly say just wait till your 25 and then get insured.  those insurance company's sure like to use statistics to increase insurance rates... and its not just young boys getting into accidents, albeit street racing can do a lot more damage than some granny backing into cadillac...

Unfortunately, the age you are is obviously the biggest reason. Either or, I'm kind of shocked at what most of you Canadians are paying for insurance.

While I havent been 18 in 26 years (God, did that time fly by!!!), I do recall Driver's Ed when I was in high school was good for a 10% discount on comprehensive and collision. And later on, defensive driving was good for the same, IIRC.  Driver's Ed was like defensive driving, only good for 3 years. Tho Drivers Ed cannot be renewed unless high school student is your career objective.. :)

Obviously, things are different across the border. I was 20 and had no problem registering an 18 year old Dodge Power Wagon. But that was also 24 years ago. And while it sucks to get old, a 2009 VW, a 2002 Ford F250 4X4 (full coverage on both), and my 89 VW (basic) is just under $3,000 a year. Which will drop a few hundred when I move out of the NY City area.

Would your rates drop if you got a rural address to use, such as a relatives?

As bad as the dollar is, it seems things are expensive up north. What is gas, diesel and cigarettes going for up there?

When I drove the Trans-Canada highway from Winnepeg to Toronto in 2006, I recall paying about $4.20 Canadian for diesel. I remember crossing the bridge into Sault St Marie,Michigan to pay $2.94 American.

Was going to suggest you google 'discount insurance' or something, and maybe get a deal, but you already did. Good luck, sounds like you need it.

By the way, the drive around Lake Superior, while longer than I thought (LOL), was a beautiful drive, though that fog was REAL nasty.  Can't wait to do it again, though.

Stay safe, stay well.

cigarettes range from $8-12 a pack at any local convenience store, and for about $25 at the native indian place you can get a carton of their cheaper brand.

I suggest getting quotes from some insurance brokers.  A good broker will shop around for you and should price check each year at renewal time.  I've always used a broker and have never found cheaper insurance by going direct.

Also 5100 is nuts for a guy with a clean record.  When I was 19 I had a VW Fox and didn't pay over $2500.

im in the same boat as jer there (8v) but i had 1 ticket (10km over) and im on  my own insurance and have something like 10% discount ...ICBC (insuracne corp of British Columbia) has a monopoly on the insurance here and i paid $133/month last year and this year post ticket its 145$/month with the added 5% off and i think $1,000 added comp to cover my new head and parts. If icbc made me pay 5,100/yr i'd take em to court :P

So when I come back from Florida, I can pick up a few cartons of Marlboros and sell them up north to help pay for repairs to my 89 :) :) :).

Not as bad as I thought. I remember they were like $7 there when they were $4 south of the US border. 'Twas a long time ago....... :)
