K 14 turbo inversion - now puling a vacuum! ?
« on: March 26, 2009, 12:27:31 pm »
I have a K 14 turbo on my 1.9TD AAZ - 91 Jetta and I go to adj my waste gate rod or what ever it is called to maybe get more boost but first got a gauge hooked up to see what it was initially set at - wow man - I don't have any boost at all - no matter what! In reality it creates a bit of a vacuum when revving - I am sure this is not normal so I go to adj the rod actuator that I think is to be hooked up to the waste gate and this one is a K 14 turbo without the rod - has like metal fins on it - next I adj the small allen wrench adj - in and then out - there at the end and nothing doing except it reads that it is pulling a slight vacuum - not exactly what the doctor ordered so now I think I have a bad turbo! How can I tell for sure or does this pretty much spell bad turbo?  Ouch what can I do? What turbos would you recomend to get for this 1.9TD AAZ and where?

I do have a T 2 turbo that is on a 1.6GTD eng now on an engine stand but I don't know if it is good nor do I know if it would work well for the 1.9TD? It has water cooling lines where as the 1.9TD K 14 doesn't so I would have to work up that situation to accommodate its cooling. Ok I know very little about turbos but am finding out now! thanks for any remarks and help!

Are you sitting in the driveway reving the engine when you're taking your readings or on the road?

The turbo will not make any boost in the driveway and you may in fact see a slight vacuum as it pulls against the airfilter.

The engine needs to be working pretty hard in order for the turbo to generate boost... the official test is in 3rd or 4th gear,  going up a moderate incline, foot to the floor, RPM at least 3000.

Ok I see where I inadvertently selected the incorrect TDI forum but so to make it legit - yes I was sitting in my driveway but I also had checked my 97 Passat 1.9TDI and it pushes 15psi boost sitting in driveway so that is what I was comparing it with but I will head up onto the on ramp for 1 45 and test under load -thanks!

On-ramps were made explicitly for turbo and EGT tests.
