Less power after retorque
« on: March 15, 2009, 09:26:08 pm »
I retorqued my T/D today, I pulled it to 100 on a fiber gasket with the ARP 12 m/m studs,I initaly did them at 80 when I put it together  and  then 85 after it ran a few times, maby a total of 20 minuets at that time. Also did it cold then too.  I couldn't realy say any fealt loose but I just went to 100 1 at a time in the right sequence.  My uestion now will retorquing change the timing?  I saw this on a post the other day and thought the person was joking But I can tell you this engine does feel like the timing has changed as doesn't have the zip it had yesterday and idles slower also, smooth on all 4 like before but slower and not quite the same pick-up as before.  I can't imagine just pulling the bolts a little more snug could change that, It's not like the head went another 1/4 inch down or something which I could possibly understand, just a microscopic amount if even that.  It is definately a little slower though and does idle slower when warm than before and it sure feels like timing to me.  Every cylinder feels equal and none miss or stumble, could it actualy have changed time at the pump, seems unlikely to me but thats just what it feels like.

torquing the head can actually distort the cylinders, etc.  which is why torque plate honing is a very good idea.  i don't know if thats the problem, but it sounds like it might be...

i would verify timing before assuming the worst though...

I wouldnt think 100 lbs. would be an excessive amount to do something like that would you?   I read on here all the time about people pulling them tighter than that and I fealt nothing out of the ordinary while torquing.  I did read on here somewhere where somebody said about timing changing on a retorque but I passed it off as a joke but it sure feels like that, I'm gonna check tomorrow and see what it is, should be 1.0 m/m like before, feels like about .90 would be to me now.
