1.5 diesel pistons.. need 1mm oversize
« Reply #15 on: March 21, 2009, 05:29:35 pm »
I am not sure yet,
but a good friend of mine may have access to a whole pile of NOS 1.5 pistons, std and oversized. (he bought an old distributor who is out of business)
He is good on parts (owns a VW parts store)
but not too intimately familiar with Diesels.
In his looking, he seemed to think that the pistons may have the same diameter as the 1.6 (76.xx) but be a different part number?

If you can provide me VW part nos, I can confirm whether he has them or not.
He thought (according to his research)
that he had piston and ring sets in std, 20 (?) and 30 (?) over....
Rod and main bearings as well. he has some "Metal-Leve" bearing sets, and some brazilian manufacture piston sets.
All stock is NOS from the 80's...

If you can let me know what you need, I can see if he has got them.

Thanks!
-Brad

i dunno what the part number is, but you can get 76.48, 76.98, and 77.48 size pistons and rings for these. ive got a set of 76.98 pistons, so i know oversize 1.5 stuff exists.

seems like the aftermarket guys still use VW part nos,
hopefully we can cross them.
I saw this thread awhile ago,
and then my buddy mentioned that he had some old dusty diesel stuff
(dusty old boxes, that is, with brand new perfect parts)
and I thought I might be able to help here...

Let me know!

If anyone is interested.... I have a new set of  German Mahle's in 1mm oversize for 1.5l.  Pistons, pins, and clips.  New in boxes- 3 sealed and 1 has been opened and looked at.

I will chech the part # when I pick them up from the machine shop on Monday, but heres the story....  I had a 1.6 block bored 1mm over to match a new set Mahle 1mm over pistons that I was lucky enough to find at a local shop.  I took the block and pitons to the machine shop and in the meantime ordered everything else for a fresh build.  When my wrist pin bushings came in the mail I ran them right over to the machinest with the rods.  Long story short, when he went to install pistons to rods and press and size new bushings he found 22mm piston pins instead of 24mm like 1.6 rods.  So... the pistons I bought which were supposed to be for 1.6 diesel turned out to be for a 1.5 ///- blessing in disguise I guess!

Im not sure which way to go here but either way I have a 1.6 block bored and prepped 1mm over with a $275 bill pending and no pistons to match.  I guess I will find another set of pistons and hope they mic out to spec and can use them in the finished block.  The great thing is that German pistons are sooo precise that I may be OK, eh?

If anyone has any other solution I would sure love to hear it!  Otherwise I will sell the 1.5 pistons.  The machinest offered me $450 already- explaining he has many customers who just want to rebuild what they have and he hasnt come accross any oversize 1.5 pistons for 25 years, let alone a German Mahle set.

So much for keeping it short!

Back to the OP,

My friend has confirmed that he has 1.5 Pistons, New Old Stock.
He has them in in std bore, and the first two oversizes.
Brands vary, but mostly brazilian.
These come with ring sets.

He says $300 per set is what he needs to get,
if there is any interest, send me a PM.

Thanks,
Brad

but does he have them in 77.48 mm? i think over sizes go in half mm steps. 76.48 is stock bore
76.98 is first OS <-- where im at right now with my 1.5 and 1.6 TD
77.48 is last OS on a 1.5 engine, not sure about a 1.6 tho.

and if he has any, does he have any german sets? cause the only way im paying 300 bucks for pistons is if they are quality german parts. brazillian parts would probably still be fine, but i favor the german parts.

Sorry, update:
Yes, he has sets with rings in std bore, and .5mm and 1.0mm oversize.
I know the .5mm over are Brazilian Metal Leve's.
I can inquire about the 1.0 over.
All this stuff is from the 80s...good old stuff.

I was surprised when he told me he could move them at $300 and cover his expense.
That seemed cheap to me, as you can easily spend that on similar pistons for 1.6, but those are actually available. (I just spent $80 buying a set of rings for my 1.6)
I figured if there was a post that went on for weeks just trying to obtain such an item, there would be more of a premium!

PM me with interest!
He has them ready to go, and he will take Paypal!

but, even with all this demand.. our economy is still in the ***ter. and hardly anyone has money to spend. and 300 bucks is quite a bit. but if its good quality parts, then it might be worth it. im just not used to buying parts made out of GOLD.  :x

when i built my toyota engine, my pistons cost me 450 bucks, came with rings, pins, clips everything.. and they were even forged. i mean these were the best pistons i could get. and for stock ones at crappa auto, it was 87 bucks or something. but then again, theres alot more 22r's cruising around then there is 1.5's and 1.6's.

he should be lucky to get anything at all... seeing as how 1.5 diesels are rare birds.  even though the pistons probably went for $300 a set from the dealer (or higher...)

And in all fairness, he may in fact have overpaid for this particular lot of stuff,
but I thought if ever there were a place where one might sell NOS 1.5 pistons in all sizes, I figured it would be here!

let me know if I can help!
Thanks!
