So right now i'm looking at 2 cars, both 1995, both around 300,000km, and both are passats. Ones a fully loaded with leather interior GLX VR6, and the other is Cruise, AC, Sunroof, 1.9 AAZ, and both are standard. I know since one is a diesel most of yous will say the diesel, with parts on the diesel to get it road worthy they are the same price, both around 1500$. I do alot of travelling, and need something relieable. what do you guys think?

with the trouble i had when i converted my golf over, i don't think i would do another conversion lol

if you buy the AAZ you'll have to inspect the crank pulley, but other than that they aren't bad cars. other than the usual passat rusting...

i think the AAZ will cost you more in the short term, but may prove to be cheaper in the long term. then again i don't know too much about VR6 reliability...

i only need to get ti'll next summer, when I order a new car. oh the VR6 has a MVI, the AAZ doesn't, its a tought choice they are both nice cars, so ones is flashy red with leather lol

in that case, go with the VR6. diesel is more of an investment. the only way i would recommend the AAZ, is if the owner had the crank pulley fixed, and the injection pump replaced post ULSD. oh and a test drive... to see how she pulls :twisted: and don't forget to check by on a real cold day/morning to see how she starts up if you can.

the guy selling the AAZ is the same person that i bought my gasser off of last month...and the rebuild trans in it dropped, i know the AAZ would be a nice car, its a hard hard choice...stupid power and comford, or effiecency and reliablity

I looked at buying a Passat wagon with a VR6 until I found out that it was rated at worse fuel mileage than my wife's Taurus wagon. Although gas is cheaper right now.

With oil swinging back up again, I'd get the fuel oil burner... leather is nice, but the color of money in your pocket is nicer. Besides, with this depression we are in, who knows what your fortune will be next year ? This might be your daily driver for a couple of years.

For certain, that 6 banger engine will only last half as long as the AAZ. I would not trust a gas sucker if it has 300Km on it... its almost used up. The exhaust valves / seats have to be rather shot by now.

If I could find a totaled Passat with a 1.9 TDI in it I would LOVE to swap that in my 02!!

Yeah the VR6 doesn't get the best gas mileage. Another thing to consider with the VR6 is the timing chains. If they've never been done they will likely need to be with those kms. The transmission has to come out to access the lower chain assembly, and I don't imagine the parts such as chains and guides are very cheap.

The main thing that would turn me off the VR6 I think is its serviceability or lack thereof compared to the AAZ. My mk3 Bentley includes instructions for the VR6...you should see the amount of work required to do something as simple as the water pump (including having to undo engine mounts and raise the engine slightly). Maybe I'm biased...just my 2 cents.

If the crank nose on the AAZ isn't damaged at this point, there are effective steps you can take to prevent failure.

As much as i like passats, VR6's are pigs. Bad fuel milage, lots of wear on the front suspension from all that extra [ it's a lot] weight, ignition coils every 2 years at $400 a pop,etc etc,etc.
