Headgasket question... gas vs diesel?
« on: March 14, 2009, 03:15:53 pm »
I hate to ask suck a stupid question,
and my strong guess is the answer is "yes, it is not even close"
but has anyone matched up a regular old 8v (like G60) headgasket
to one from a 1.6TD?

I know of many places that make metal headgaskets for G60 and other 8v applications.

I have to know that wont work before I can justify the head mod or 53Willys gasket.

Thanks!

Aren't the G60 engines all hydraulic lifter? If so, you'd need to do the same head mod as would be required for the AAZ anyway.

Yeah, for sure all G60s are Hydro,
but there would be no real benefit to using an aftermarket MLS gasket  for a G60 as opposed to a MLS from an AAZ. (if you have to plug the head for both)
It can only cost more, and probably be not as well built.

But, if they were to fit right up....

I can get my hands on a new one of each,  and compare,
but I cannot return it once I have cut the package, which means I am keeping one of them.

But again, I keep expecting someone to say
"no, I thought that too, but then I looked..."

I don't think the gasser HG would have the reinforced area under the pre-cups.

yes,
but would that matter on a steel HG?

under the right circumstances, yes.  reading at how the pre-cups are supposed to protrude from the head, it could very well give a sealing issue.   :(  i was hoping to use 1.9TDI MLS gasket for the 1.6/1.9 as they are much much cheaper!

yes, but I really do not like installing the plug or welding the hole.
Still waiting to hear from 53Willys to see if he got his up and running.
Ill go that way if I can...

but that still brings me back to a permanent modification of the head and block.
I finally got through all of 53Willys' build thread,
and figured out what I needed about the headgasket,
(it does work fine, with LOTS of torque)
So I guess I am going that way.

And also, one thing that totally precludes a gas HG from possibility is the lack of different thicknesses.

Thanks,
BRAD
