Transmission Ratio's and other assorted anomalies... ?
« on: February 23, 2009, 12:38:41 am »
I hope this is the correct place to post this, I have no idea?

Ok so I am planning on swapping in an N/a in the spring in to my mk1 Jetta. The problem is, is that the trans that is mated to the engine is an AWY code, and the one i have from the 1.7 that is in the car is a 4K, virtually the same ratios.. crappy ones at that :(

4K      3.94/ 3.45 2.12 1.44 1.13 0.89
AWY   3.94/ 3.45 1.94 1.44 1.13 0.89

Either of which produce a very scary 3432 rpm at 110 k/h

NOW this is a great trans when mated up to the torquey 1.7 It's a good trans for small hp engines.. 76hp will make my little car fly because of the close ratio trans.. However on the diesel 3400 is a bit too high :(

Does anybody know how hard it is to find a good trans in Ontario?  Ultimately one of these; 4Y, 9A, ACD, AEN, would be the best due to their ratios; 3.67    3.45    2.12    1.44    1.13    0.89. Then swap out the 5th for a .75 or even better .71

I know what a PITA i am being but hey, this isnt the vortex.. this is a real forum right? where people actually answer questions instead of "flame the n00bs" :).

SO! to recap my blubbering, I wish to find; 4Y, 9A, ACD, or AEN and then also a .75 or .71 5th gear to swap in. How hard would this be? and does anybody know where i should look?

Thanks so much in advanced, for putting up with me .......

Jeremy

i have an AGS currently in my car that i got off andy2.  its ratio's are as follows:
3.94   3.45   1.94   1.29   0.91   0.75

approximately 2600 rpm to go 100km/h which is quite respectable, and great for a TD.  the only reason i'm considering selling is because i'm eyeballing a CTN.  that trans will let my mTDI work at the rpm's it was designed to.

i'd also like to sell my kevlar clutch setup with it too if i do sell the trans.  it comes with a lightened flywheel, stage 1 pressure plate, and stock clutch with kevlar facing (very long lasting!!!).  the pressure plate doesn't really hold the power that i'm making now, but a quick guess is 150 ft/lbs torque or so.  a stage 2 pressure plate should work great.  i'd sell both for $400.  trans alone for $150.

Hey those are some nice tall gears, you make me wish i had money right now Jon. :( lol I'd snatch the whole thing from you if i had the cash :P

Which also brings up another question, of how high is to high to cruise on a diesel? Like say, you were cruising along at a certain RPM regardless of vehicle speed. What would be too high for a 1.6 hydro n/a? Would say crusing at 3600 rpm be outta the question? or would it have the same effect it has on any other engine, quicker wear? Like I know people draw some images of revs and diesels not coinciding. Well why not? lol

Thanks dood. :)

well it will quickly wear a hole in your pocket if you know what i mean   other than that, just make sure you warm the motor up before getting it up to that speed.  usually the drive to the highway will suffice, but if you lived 1 min away from the highway, it might be a good idea to let idle for a min or two if it was really cold.  good oil always helps too.  oil consumption on a tired motor is of concern at higher rpm's.

Would the whole "oil consumption on older engines being a problem at higher rpm's" be the the same or similar in gas engines? or is that a diesel specific problem? I think the engine in question has around 300k on it.. So the way i look at it, i might as well beat it up a bit then warrant a rebuild or a swap down the road to a TD :) Oil consumption, that's not to bad.. just so long as its not like a litre every time i run it :P

Thanks Jon.

the problem with diesel engines is that the engine will actually burn the oil that enters into the cylinder if theres enough blowby, and its not synthetic. (synthetics help reduce oil consumption by burning, but they will still ignite in the cylinder under extreme temperatures ie: if you run synthetic oil through the injection system)

i managed to burn a full litre of oil on a recently re-ringed motor with about 70km of driving... which is terrible!  but i averaged about 140km/h with a short distance at 180km/h... in which there was still pedal left   man traffic from Cobourg is INSANE!!!  people still blew by me, but that was about 5 years ago.  with the new laws, people are driving much slower...

hope that makes sense.. im a bit tired
