turbo failure story, and question!!
« on: February 19, 2009, 10:01:58 am »
ok so my van started spewing out oil from the exaust!!
pouring out

got the turbo off, found the shaft had completely snapped, and was passing oil!

so to repair or buy new

founda guy on ebay with a couple of new t1544 turbos

made an offer on one, somehow ended up with it for 50, plus 12 postage, BRAND NEW!!!

the strange bit is the actual garrett stamp isnt on there, although it is all over the castings as usual
looks like someone has self stamped gt1544 on it a little wonkey!

now im not really that bothered as to why, as long as the turbo works, it was complete with new actuator rod, although i have ended up using the original one, as the next problems where .....

the exhaust side was different, the triangle part where mounting holes are, was back to front, and the outer part where exaust downpipe attaches was totally different
clearly, this was although the exact same size and type of turbo, for a different motor, maybe thats why it was so cheap?? not made for vw, half the price ??

anyway that was easily fixed, after i had managed to drill out the snapped bolt in old exaust side of turbo
took both the exaust sides off and fitted old one to new turbo, lined it all up, easy = new turbo for £ 62
a rebuild kit would prob be  more !!!

now the question .....

i cant find one, and dont know if it had one on to begin with, im sure though it should have a gasket in between the turbo and manifold ????????????????

wheres best place for one if it needs one??
and gasket or not between the inlet elbow that mounts to inlet manifold??
there was none just seamed like some liquid gasket sealer or something!!!

o and anyone fitted the inlet side off a t2 to this kind of turbo??

thanks

The short answer is that there is no OEM gasket between the manifold and the turbo.

You can get them from a few after-market suppliers on-line, but VW doesn't use 'em or supply 'em and most of us just make sure the two surfaces are lapped flat and bolt them together.

There is, however, a gasket on the intake manifold where you describe... I get mine from the dealer.
