Headers on a Diesel?

I know that decreasing the resistance of the exhaust increases the over all efficiency of the engine and such. lol
Does that mean that in all good theory, by adding like race headers to a diesel, and then opening up the intake real good, would make for some good power gains and lower egt?
ALSO where is the best place to get 8v headers? they will be the same as the 8v gassers correct?
Seems like this may definitely be something i will be doing in the future.. maybe

So say for this header from Techtonics Tuning:
http://www.techtonicstuning.com/showpart.asp?partnum=251.242it says 1.75 in.. does that mean each in dividual runner is 1.75in? what is the diameter of the pipe after they come back to one? Anybody else run headers on a diesel?

nice, but, uh, where does the turbo go :?:

I have an N/a, Guess i should have mentioned that eh? lol
Do you figure it would make a good improvement on an N/a engine? I mean headers are as nonrestrictive as they get right? LOL Plus you can tell people yeah my diesels got headers. lol
Anyone else ever do this to an n/a?

Is this on a MK2? If it were mine I would find a dual outlet manifold/ downpipe from a gas car and go with that. I don't think there is much difference in flow between it and headers. You would also have the reliability of an OEM piece, headers are prone to cracking. Couple that with a nice exhaust system and you should get a nice little bump in power.

X2 on what Cyrus said... Headers are more trouble than they are worth IMHO... You'll probably be able to find the decent manifold for less $$$ and have alot less headaches...

for the price of headers you might as well just turbo your N/A with a VNT, and enjoy even more power than they would deliver, and wayy more fun

Yes the 1.75 are the primary tubes. I have never put headers on a diesel so I don't know what the gain is, but the only reason I hated them on a gas engine is it made it hard as can be to get to the spark plugs. You shouldn't have that problem LOL. I did put a 2.25 inch exhaust on my NA and a custom intake and actually had to let off on the interstate. Before it was so gutless that I would floor it and let the hills keep me at about 65 MPH. After I did all the work to the engine I was headed to work looked down and I was doing about 83MPH.
IMHO If you want to do it I bet you would see gains, wonderful if you could make your own, so so if you had to buy the 400. some dollar one.

I have a 16v dual exhaust manifold let me know if you want it..
I think a good manifold would be more noticeable on a NA diesel...vs a TD
but the gains would be very minimal either way...

X2
3X ;-) You'll get more of an increase in efficiency and power with the turbo than a header. Do you have access to a TIG welder ? You could make your own stainless steel header with 304 SS and not worry about cracks, or make you own 3" or 2.5" SS down pipe for a turbo if you go that route.

So.... speaking of headers.
Anyone know of a manufacture that DOES make a Tube Header for a Turbo Diesel?
I have seen pictures of them, here and there, but never found out who made them.

Dave (935racer) made some. i'm sure his tubular manifold wouldn't be cheap (made for a turbo). port & polishing, as well as polishing the N/A intake system, and a nice free flowing exhaust should wake up the motor.
but it won't be anything like an N/A with a VNT & conservatively fueled engine. good vnt turbo's (with manifold) can be had for about $300. they work well in the mk1 application with the ALH manifold, but not in the mk2/mk3 as the rear mount gets in the way. i suppose a custom mount could be made so the turbo can clear it though... really does make things easier when you don't need a turbo flange

Those 935racer tube turbo manifolds were works of art. I don't need, I want!

If this is the direction the OP wants to go, I
have a Rabbit dual outlet manifold and downpipe I'd be willing to cut a deal on. I don't own a transverse VW, so it's practically useless to me.

Both are rusty, but no holes except the ones that are supposed to be there!

Does anyone know if a 16v dual outlet manifold will fit an 8v n/a diesel head? If so, Turbine we may have a deal in progress

lol

no only 8v stuff will work on the diesels, i heard a n/a 1.6 with a exhuast the other day...sounded really cool actually...
the good thing about n/a is the instant torque they produce.....its a different driving experiance...
i think if you were to do a few tweaks it would make it a much better (to drive) engine
plus it would be good to see/hear of tuned n/a...and it would be a different from everybody else...
