so i had my engine apart to fix the headgasket and throw in some piston rings only to find several cracks in the head between the valves and the cumbustion chambers. That and the block also needs boring out and new pistons.
so now im on the search for a rebuilt long block. problem is that i really dont know where to look.
anyone know of a place selling long blocks that has a good reputation with VWs? Ive been told to steer clear of the common aftermarket rebuilds in the area.
BTW area is SW Ontario
I've always liked the work I got done at Acheson's in LOndon, but I've never had VW stuff done there. I just opened up the triad and bought a car this week to get an engine when a head fell apart on me. Couldn't find any 1.9's, and no 1.6's either at the wrecker's.
Cracks between the valves aren't a big deal, but if it needs to be bored and have a bigger set of pistons.............

there are always cracks between the valves. That is normal. Scares a lot of people when they see it, but it doesn't do anything. The head is fine provided nothing else is wrong with it.
i didnt say between the valves i said between the valves and the combustion chambers (swirl chambers) plus the cracks between the valves. And on one cylinder the face of the head has actually shifted on one side of the crack and is around a 1/2 mm higher off the rest of the surface
Not good!
I've got a rebuildable block (needs to be bored), a non rebuildable block with three good oversized pistons, a wrecked head that came with that block, and a head I think is rebuildable. want a project? This as 1.6 TD stuff. Also know that the last triad had an ad from a guy in West Lorne with two Golf's with 1.6NA engines, wanted 600 for the pair, good looking set of snowflakes on one. one engine in hte 300,000 range, other more miles.
Nice repair job. I meant...of course...before you repair them. My head coincidentally has cracks between all the valves, and is working fine. So did the head I took off my 79 diesel rabbit, and it also worked fine. So you can use those heads with cracks between the valves. But like I said before, nice repair job.
sorry, forgot to mention this is a 1.9TD that i need
