T/D-N/A mileage comparrison

How much if any increase is there {mileage wise} on lets say a stock 1.6 N/A compared to a stock  1.6 T/D? No pump or injector mods on either engine, everything equal except .020 bore on both engines and rebuilt stock t3 turbo with a Stage 1 compressor from MJM turbos. I'm wondering what to expect from my just rebuilt 1.6 T/D compared to my 35,000 mile ago rebuilt 1.6 N/A which gets 50-52 mpg cruizing.  Please tell me it's a bunch more  I'm guessing it will take somewhere in the neighborhood of 37  years before I break even at todays fuel prices if the T/D will get at least 5 MPG more.  Not a very good investment but I never played with a turbo before, I'm not an investor but I hope it's a hell of a lot of fun though .

Seriously though, is there much difference mileagewise between turbo-d and non-turbo-d driven the same :?:

If you drive a TD at the same acceleration rates as a non-turbo it should yield better fuel economy.  I don't know of anyone who has that self control.

Andrew

Thanks for the fast reply and as far as the self control I know that's probably gonna be a thing of the past for me too

You will NOT get better fuel economy with the TD.

It has a turbo.. you WILL use it.. YOU WILL USE IT!!

Who in there right mind would drive a TD like its a n/a? If you drive like your grandmother you will get better in the TD due to the turbo increasing fuel optimization. But a show of hands tells me you will be power hungry :)

have fun Brethren! :P

not to mention if you baby the turbo it will gunk up...

according to this graph, the TD will achieve better fuel economy in a certain range...

now if you install a quick spooling turbo, and get a much taller 5th that will alow you to cruise closer to 2000 rpm at highway speeds, then you will definitely see an MPG increase.  might be more hassle than its worth though for 5 or so mpg.

Well, obviously I'm not in my right mind to begin with or I would't have built this thing in he first place and having a perfect little N/A in the bunny now with 35,000 on it I built 3 years ago.  I guess that motor will sit on the engine stand waiting to go back in.  If this one holds up like the N/A I'll be amazed and extremely happy :D  It would be nice to find another body to put that motor in, it's hard to find something that isn't all rusted up.
