hi ive just been to look at a stock 1.9td and box for my mk1 caddy out of a k reg mk3 golf and told the bloke id have it and we agreed a price of £125 its done 154 thousand and i heard it running and saw it move in all 5 gears and heard the turbo whistling away only thing i forgot to check was if it was an eco diesel or not so can any one tell me the sure fire way of checking or has an1 got any pictures to compare or can any1 tell me if the eco diesel is a different code to the aaz id heard it was 1Y if so where can i find the code? and will my mk1 driveshafts fit the gearbox?

Your MKI axles should fit, if it has 90mm flanges.
Engine code for an eco is 1V, you can tell if it's an eco-diesel by looking at the injection pump. If it's a TD with a boost enrichment module, it's not an eco.
Here is an eco:
if you were to use the MK3 trans on the MK1 caddy, you could just swap the flanges from the MK1 tranny over to the MK3. the MK3 flanges stick out about a half inch more, and so custom shafts or mk2 100mm ones will be required.
i've done it, and its not too difficult. you just need new seals (its REALLY hard to take them out without damaging them) and a C clamp as it will be spring loaded (one side will go on easy, and the other will be pushing the spring, so you need the c-clamp)
The easiest way to tell is if there is a boost line (cloth covered) running from the intake manifold to the top of the pump.
