well, I just got my car back from my parents place and tore into the motor to see how much damage my slipped timing did to it.
I was unhappy to find that the crank pulley had come loose and ground the little key out completely, and ate up the keyway in the crank real good.
I guess I will be putting pins in it because there is no way I can source a crank right now and this car was supposed to be on the road like three months ago.
I will keep posted and take some pics off the crank nose repair for posterity's sake.
this motor is supposed to be a turbo/supercharged monster breathing fire from a cummins pump, but it just seems to be a hole in my wallet and a lump of metal in my buddies garage.

A blower + turbo + nos + lots of fueling really makes these things fly though.

Here's a tip on the AAZ crank fix. Basically, you can broach the crankshaft end, and put a TD crank pulley on there. The nice thing is that you really don't have to reference where you install the groove on the crank, since it's independent of the crank itself, provided you loosen the cam sprocket and pull your IP timing pin when you set your timing belt.

yeah, its a 1.6, and I think I am going to go with the pin repair technique that the gasser guys use with supercharged motors as it should be easier to do and will allow me to use my sprocket rather than finding a TDI one.
I am also having issues getting a pulley to work on my new injection pump(from a cummins) but I have a buddy with a lathe that should be able to help me out with that.
