Minimum oil quantity
« on: July 29, 2005, 07:51:35 am »
Hi all,

I have a VW Syncro with an AAZ swapped in. I had to use the original 1.6 oild pan and oil pump, and the AAZ is installed at 52º. I have had a lot of trouble trying to determine what is the minimum oil level that I should have with this new configuration. I am wondering if any of these two "hipothesis" are valid:

1. The minimum quantity that ensures that at any angle-oil temp-engine speed the oil pump never sucks air
2. The minimum quantity that ensures that the oil light warning never turns on even with the oil at maximum temp and the engine at idle.

Any hint ?
Thanks

Nacho

The AAZ is pretty much the same configuration as the 1.6. I would think that installing the 1.6 dipstick and filling it according to the marks on that dipstick would work just fine.

Put 4.5 litres in it with a fresh filter and make your own, new marks on the dip stick.
If you fill it up to the level as per TD T3 then it will smoke, and possibly run on it's own oil.
TD T3's don't like oil to the top of the dipstick, once the oil level has dropped a little the smoking stops.
Theres some CAD drawing on the net somewhere showing a TD and a TDI using the T3 sump and the difference in height of the oil level.

Thanks for the asnwers.

The problem that I have is that if I put 4.5 liters and I change the oil filter, then the oil will hardly reach the minimum of the dipstick marks ! So that is because I am puzzled. And the engine is consuming a lot of oil (no leaks, new turbo, rings, valve guides, ...). Is it possible that the oil consumption is because I am using too much oil ?

I have tried to let the oil going down the minimum of the dipstick and never got an oil light warning, nor the engine gets hotter ...

¿?

Thanks again
