Author Topic: Broke down and bought a 2009 TDI (Read 6332 times)

After much debate, I broke down and will pick up my 2009 Jetta TDI today or tomorrow, waiting to hear from the dealer. Leather interior, moonroof are about the only options i wanted (and was leery getting the moonroof). Six speed manual, of course.

One of my oddities is i cant have an auto transmission in a small car.

Even with fuel dropping, I am still pessimistic that something will skyrocket fuel again. I ended up keeping my 2002 Ford pickup, the dealer was only going to give me $8500 for it. While certain it would sit on a lot, I did understand the dealers perspective, and I may end up keeping it, or selling it after the winter. But I was not going to let it go this low.

As for the 1989, I have a few options {and with this comes more questions...

}.

I have a chance to get a FREE low mileage 1982 1.6 NA (approx 100k) motor from a Chief who worked in my firehouse one tour. Of course he recommended a compression test, for it has been sitting a few years. I did call a VW specialist in Queens, and was told:

Different fuel systems between the 2. Won't work.
Different flywheels will also cause a problem. 89 is a 5 speed man. Not certain what transmission went with free motor.

Since labor costs here are not cheap, it may be actually cheaper for me to drive it across the border and let Dr. Diesel do the work on the rings on the motor in it now with 225,000 miles (and a nice excuse to get away for a few days......lol) and take the plane or train back home to NYC. Sounds crazy, but saves $$$ and puts $$ in a fellow GTD's pocket. Tyler has answered millions of my questions and recommended him, so what the Hell? Road trip!!

P.S. And also get that 89 IP "Gilesfied!"

Working in Brooklyn, the streets and neighborhood are not exactly the smoothest. I'll let the 89 take the abuse of streets and nicks and dings, and at times vandalism.

Looking into the biofuels as well (coffee? hmmm) and as we know, the old 1.6 is a perfect car for that. Reading that the 140 HP can be upgraded to the European spec of 170, I may wait till the warranty expires. Hell, going from 52 HP to 140 is a victory in itself... lol

The 09 will be blue, I'll try to get pics for those who are interested.

I've been holding back on getting a new (er) one for a while now. Trying to hold off for another year at least, thinking the 09's will be around at that time and I may be able to find a low mile one for thousands less than new.

Anyway, post up some pics for sure.

I hope you enjoy it too. I also believe the fuel will eventually go up and expect to see a "usual" $100USD per barrel within two years.

yep.. $40 per barrel will not hold. the guys with crap loads of money are just waiting to see how low oil will go (after they sold it all when it was at $140) then will just gobble up all the cheap oil... its a dirty trick for sure... and we get stuck with the cost!

And I'm going to do my part driving a car that gets 40+ mpg and doesn't run on tons of batteries, has pep and still looks good.

And commute with a 20 yr old car that can operate on cooking oil

Went to get pics today and we get 4 inches of snow. And the birds christened it as well. Did put 160 miles on it yesterday to break it in, and did 44.5 mpg. And also learned that diesel VW's can be fast AND comfortable lolol.

So far, so good......

As for the speculators driving up oil again (or national/international events) I may scrape my pennies and join them as well.

Won't make a lot like they will, but I'll try.

As for the different fuel system on the 82 vs the 89. Yes and no. I don't exactly know what you are planning but it'll work :lol:

As for the Mk 2, we need pics. Gilesify the pump - definitely. It's the best money I ever spent.

Mine were electrical (battery, alternator, power windows, locks, security system, lights, etc. etc. etc.), turbos (3), intercooler (2) and finally the engine grenaded at 130,000 km (about 80,000 miles)
I took a loss and traded for a Toyota. Best trade I ever made.

Wow, sorry to hear that. Hopefully (for my sake) that car ya had was a lemon.

Since I did get a 3 yr/ 36,000 mile warranty, may be in my better interest to get an aftermarket warranty.

So far, no problems with 186 miles...

Well, if the new one starts giving you reasons to drink, you could always swap in a 1.6

Usually extra warranties only benefit the seller, but I bought one for my family car for 1200 bucks when I bought her. $4450 worth of warranty work later....it was a good deal for me. They were VERY happy when my plan expired LOL. She now has over 300,000 on her thanks to that work (yea, it's a gasser). Something to consider.

With VW's known electrical problems, and the issues Steward had, I think an extended warranty will be in my best interests, as you also experienced as well. Have to admit, the 2009 rides great (so far).

After the new year, and i find a 2nd job, the 89 will be heading north for work with the good Dr. Diesel. After the snow, I may sell the F-250 and leave me with the 89 and the 09. 09 is still to new to drive in NYC. Since NYC has to keep the main roads clear, side streets don't get plowed or sanded till April....

At least the 89 can take the abuse. And tho it definitely does not ride as nice as the new car, or even my F-250, I have to admit it is still a blast driving a 52 HP MkII all over the place.

I see why folks are hooked on MkII's. I can imagine the fun I can still have with it after the Dr. gets it, and my IP gets "Gilesfied".

Now if I could only repair them............
