I had an 86 WVW Jetta TD. I loved it.. till I wrecked it. Bone stock worn out everything.
Got an 87 Coupe and swapped everything over. Down to the sticker inside the fuel door. Seen here, Gasser to TD.

Now that i've gotten comfortable with something outside my realm of reality (Have a 99 Cougar with a 3.0 Sable motor swap ) .. I like it.
So I'm going to 1.9 HG it (I have a two hole.. so I can get say a 99 bug 1.9 diesel 2 hole gasket?), Raceware Bolts, Rebuilt valvetrain, new gaskets and piston rings, turbo boost increase to 2 bar, injection pump mod, exhaust, new injectors.
I got stock size rings to avoid the machine shop for oversizes. If the motor was well maintained (which I think it was.. I was the second owner)
that will do just fine. Stock rings are moly, not chrome right?
I expect around 130whp after everything is done. Be generous with advice.. i'm mechanical but an IDI noob.
Damnit!!
I had this big reply all typed up and closed the tab..!!
Anyway.
Contact myke_w on this board for your parts, German parts and great prices even with shipping.
You cannot used the 99 TDI HG you need the 1.9 AAZ gasket, Myke will get you the correct parts.
http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=798OT for a min, I just bought a 98 Contour SVT, I'l going to do the 3L swap as well it looks like. I would keep the 2.5 but the previous owner overheated it till it stopped running, turns over fine but there is zero compression on any cyl.
You on any other boards for your cougar? Maybe drop me a PM so we don't clutter up your thread here.
http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=645This is the thread in the faq. It looks like you already know the information in here for the most part, but maybe this will give you some more ideas. You could try to find the 1.9L head and stick it on there with the HG. I have heard that is even more horse. I think you can find that by searching Franken motor.
why can't you use a tdi gasket from the 96-98 engines? the blacks are the same as an aaz
Or do I need to block the wastegate as well? I'd be scared to do such a thing...
The wastegate will continue to do its thing unless it is blocked or "tricked" into believing it isn't seeing enough boost yet. Do some research on manual boost controllers and how they work. You shouldn't need to block it off completely.
To cool man!
Glad you got it together.. I feel all warm inside when someone gets another diesel back up a running..
