A2 Turbo boost
« on: December 13, 2008, 04:23:40 pm »
I just finished installing an A2 turbo on my 1.9 IDI and I am wondering if there is a way to increase the boost?

Perhaps something that connects between vacuum line and the waste-gate controller.

Plug it.

If you do a bit of searching on here you will find someone on the forum sells a controller you can put between the waste gate and the diaphram.

I see some posts where they blocked off a single metal line. Mine has two vacuum hoses. I didn't quite understand it all, my understanding is that they plug off both lines so that the waste-gate never opens and then they get full boost for whatever the turbo is putting out. I guess that would be 14-15lbs of boost. Is that correct?

Just curious, but will I see an increase in MPG? Because right now I feel like I'm driving a gas burner.

I have a T3 on my 1.9 IDI with a blocked waste gate and fuel turned up.....I will see 40psi on a long pull in 4th gear. I try and not go over 30.

the T3 is only efficient to about 20 psi or so... so anything above and beyond that will most likely give you less MPG.  it also takes fuel to spool the turbo, so that will also affect MPG.

best to just drive gingerly if you want better economy...

Unless I am mistaken I don't have a T3, I have an A2. It has two vacuum hoses. One is large and the other is smaller. Is there a max PSI for best efficiency?

I also forgot to add that my FI pump does not have the annaroid (sp?) on top. This engine came NA and all I did was add the turbo. I did not upgrade the pump but I did have the flow rate increased and changed the nozzles to pop at 155 bar. Is it absolutely necessary to have the other type of FI pump?

I also don't have an inter-cooler (yet) because it hasn't been above freezing in over a month. But I would like to add one at some point. And if I increase the boost I know that will affect the exhaust temps.

Suggestions?

Thanks for your input. You guys have it way over me on some of this stuff.

Who makes that turbo?

If you don't have the aneroid, you'll either be running lean under boost (limiting boost as well) or running super-rich out of boost. I'd opt for lean, given a choice.

If you don't have the LDA (a "turbo" injection pump) you wont be adding fuel at higher rpm and by turning up the fueling you will be burning heaps more fuel on average. You're running rich for sure without an LDA.
