I'm new here but I've been reading it for a good while. I would like to know how to remove the wastegate actuator from a Garrett T3 from a 83 jetta TD. It is the one that looks like it is pressed into the hot end. The Bently book says it is not servicable and you have to buy the whole turbo, is that true? Also can you get a rebuilt or new cannister for it or adapt it to another style actuator? I just ordered this turbo from a vendor on line and the actuator leaks a little but will open the valve visibly at 15 psi with my aircompressor. The motor is totaly rebuilt and totaly stock except for a .020 rebore. The turbo was increased to a stage 1 on the compressor side. The motor is not in the car, still being put together. I don't feel like going through all the hassle of returning the turbo and it seems fine otherwise.
I'm unsure how to service it. Several people on here have told me that it has a snap ring around the seam on the top of the can. Mine does not. So i'm not sure.
Yes I read that one too about the snap ring and there is not one on this thing. I still have the old turbo with the rusted out actuator on it. It was all tore up so I I sawed off the top of the canister to see what was inside There is a nut on the end of the valve itself but it looks like this whole thing was assembled on the turbo and then the top of the can put on and crimped.
I carefully turn back the crimp with a pair of Pliars to access the Diaphram, nut and spring. The diaphram is made of some high tech type of plastic.
Easy to put back together, just have to re crimp it so diaphram doesn't leak.
Looks like the canister is just pressed in.
I tried for a while trying to open up the crimp but since the rest of it was so rotted up I just cut the top off. The problem is can you get another canister because the diaphram is really torn up on this one. I don't think the one on the rebuilt turbo is as bad as this one but it is leaking and has to get worse. That's why I was wondering about changing it to a different type if a replacement isn't available and if anybody has done it successfully. Also doess anybody recomend a place to get wastegate canisters from or diffferent adaptations possible.
I would send it back and get a non-defective turbo. I think you are just asking for troubles trying to work with that one. Was the vendor one with questionable product ?
